Bravtov.com: We skip a Quickfire and go straight to Elimination this week!
Gail Simmons: We threw a little twist at our chefs. For this Elimination Challenge, I'm sure that they picked countries they thought they were going to have to make pastries from, but we had them instead create a dessert that looks like a savory course from that country -- a savory food in disguise. It totally threw them off. I mean, French/Italian/Spanish seem doable. But, I will admit when Sally chose Cuba I tried to get her to change. I asked her three times "Are you sure?," but she wasn't budging. So we let her keep it and then I think she got worried when she realized what she was being asked to do, and had no idea how to accomplish it using Cuban food.
As much as it seems like a challenge that's out of the blue, it actually was a great way for all of us to separate the four of them stylistically and give them all a final push before the finale to see what they are capable of. It made them think in a whole new way. Not that they aren't capable of doing it; it just requires them to step out of the box a bit, and I think they all really did a good job overall. We were impressed by their creations and it was a great challenge. I was very skeptical when I first heard about it -- I didn't think it made any sense, but once we sat down at that table and the dishes just started coming out, I realized it was a really, really telling exercise for our chefs.
I couldn't believe the judges finally sent Orlando home and then he said what was his downfall. Out of the mouth of babes, "I thought I was the best at everything!" That guy drove me nuts he was so arrogant. And NOTHING he did impressed me. It was all too simplistic. He never followed challenge rules he always tried to slide in there. I am so proud of the judges ORLANDO GOODBYE!"
Awww ... grown men crying (Carlos last week, Orlando this week) make ME cry. I was hoping the judges would show some mercy and let Orlando through even if I knew -- you do NOT cook paella in a rice cooker!!! You do NOT cook rice in a rice cooker if you are a CHEF!!! --- let all 4 of them through (even if I did think and still think Orlando should have gone home last week instead of Carlos).
SALLY was my bet, this week and last week. I thought even last week she was AWESOME. And that she deserved to win even LAST week w/ her carnival corn dish rather than dear, sweet, loveable Matthew's fried apple dish and his 3 little pig auction. Matthew's dish I could make -- Sally's I wouldn't even know how to start and that's why I bother to watch. Otherwise, I'll just switch to those 2 other networks.
Uhhm -- i don't understand Gail's comment that people would think b/c of Sally's stress and hesitation that she didn't deserve the win. Why ever not? It's what's put on the table, right? And as Johnny Iuzz-- says, all the more impressive. I was rooting for Matthew, but now -- can we have a GIRL win? Especially one so tiny and spunky and creative and SKILLED?
I didn't understand how Orlando went home and Sally stayed. Everyone seemed happy with Orlando's concept and flavors. Everyone complained that Sally's sandwich was hard to eat and messy. Those were the exact criticisms to Carlos last week. He went home. Sally won? The judging is ridiculously random. Do you guys just pull the winner and loser's name from a hat?
You made the wrong choice. Using pastry from a package should have been an immediate disqualification for someone trying to get into the finals. The judges talked about how it looked like Beef Wellington? Of course it did, because it was hidden by PANTRY pastry. Weak choice.
So far I've only seen one episode (the one with the Willy Wonka Theme). How have I missed this??? I watch a number of Bravo shows and this one just slipped right by me. I LOVE DESSERTS!!!! Again, I just started watching so I don't know how it works but I know you guys have guests. If at all possible I recommend Kelli from Kheesekakes by Kelli in the Atlanta, GA area. Hers was the first cheesecake I ever tasted and actually liked. (I'm in my 30s and this was just a few years ago....it was a really big deal for me, still is!) Anyway, I'm enjoying the show and would love for you all to experience what I have!
