Team Top Chef

Craig tries to step up, but Nelson pays the price.

Sep 8, 20110

Although Craig made himself captain, his team kind of got away from him. As a result, his team ended up with a full-on Monet of a table. You know what i mean -- from far away (my couch) it's OK, but up close, apparently, it's a big ol' mess. The Housewives and the judges thought the table was kind of childish, and after hearing their thoughts, I agreed. None of the desserts really hit it out of the park besides Rebecca's crumble -- something Lisa used to make her daughter, Pandora, when she was younger. But even a dish Lisa described as the best thing she'd eaten all day couldn't save an entire team. And one of them had to go home. And that chef was Nelson. His cotton candy/lollipop just didn't taste good, and sadly, I saw it coming. There's just something about a thick layer of colored chocolate that doesn't appeal to me, but maybe I just haven't had the right one yet!  I have to say I kind of loved Nelson -- he had integrity and a lot of talent, and I will miss him as a viewer. Johnny made a point of informing Craig that he would've gone home if he didn't have immunity. Eek!

The other team offered a sophisticated but still pink table, and their desserts were just received better by the Housewives and Giggy! See, they made a treat for Giggy, which was thoughtful and smart.

As awesome as this episode was (and it was), next week's it OUT OF CONTROL! I may have watched it already, and I may have cried multiple times out of just sheer happiness. After all, isn't that what desserts are all about?

Until next week, Have a Nosh! (And, as always, tell me what you've been noshing on.)

So bummed to see Nelson go! Having that architecture background and applying it to dessert design was so fascinating to watch. I'm glad you picked him as a contestant so we could watch him for a while. And is anyone else noticing that when Craig gets upset he does this bunny thing where he wiggles his nose? It's just killing me. Thanks for the fun! Loving the challenges.

There was only one part of this episode that really annoyed me...

Hugh Acheson says, and I QUOTE, "the red velvet cake is more black forest-y.. red velvet doesn't have chocolate in it, so it's a little different.."

First of all she actually SAYS 'pink velvet' which could mean.. anything. She doesn't exactly explain to him what's in it. He then immediately assumes she means it to be red velvet then INCCORECTLY states that red velvet does not contain chocolate, when traditionally that is WHERE the deep red color comes from. It may not contain the dictionary definition of 'chocolate' but it DOES contain cocoa powder, which I maintain is necessary in a red velvet and counts as 'chocolate.'

This guy is supposed to know stuff.. he's a guest judge for a dessert competition.........

I'm not sure if I want to continue watching a show that leaves me feeling angry after every episode. Some pinhead excecutive apparently thinks we'd rather watch the character Craig than see a legitmate cooking competition. As if that very notion weren't insulting enough, you give us the most obviously rigged QF in history to protect the guy. Lemon/Strawberry Pancakes? Please stop treating us like idiots.

I'm here to disagree with bdaniels as well...putting a Housewife on Top Chef Desserts is a perfect pairing, especially THAT Housewife. I am a huge fan of Top Chef AND all of the Housewives series. Not to mention Flipping Out and Rachel Zoe Project. As far as opinions go, not all cooks can be put in the same pot.

Perhaps if you did your homework, bdaniels, you would realize that the housewife in question is a very successful restauranteur. She has been preparing, designing, serving, and tasting desserts as a profession for 3 decades. I can think of few people more qualified for the job of guest judge.

I had recorded the show last night and was enjoying watching it this evening until I found out that I was going to be subjected to people that I intentionly do not watch. Seriously, housewives of "who the hell cares". Have been a fan of Top Chef from day one....will not watch it if I have to be subjected to idiots. You should be ashamed....cancelled the recording and came directly to the computer to voice my indignation. Please don't do this again. The two "brands" are not a good mix.....silly, undignified, publicity hounds are not always good judges of good taste. Again, who thought that a Top Chef fan wanted to see a "housewife"?
