A Yen for Yan

It was about time Martin Yan guest-judged a challenge!

Feb 20

Hello my little, Last Chance Kitchen viewers!

Before we get to this week's grand reveal, we take a couple trips. First, we follow Sheldon back to Hawaii (if only we were really there) and see him expediting in his own kitchen. His kitchen staff is just adorable, totally flustered by the cameras watching them. They're keeping it real, you guys. Sheldon seems to be enjoying some newfound fame, and if that gets more covers in his restaurant, I'm happy. We learn that Sheldon staged at a restaurant very unlike his own in an attempt to hone his technique, and although this has mixed results later, I don't think it was a bad idea. We also have the pleasure of seeing Sheldon with his beautiful wife and children, enjoying a beachfront BBQ. OK -- who's ready to move to Hawaii?

Next, we fly to L.A. to find Brooke, explaining her day-to-day life balancing motherhood and her roles as a chef and restaurateur. She heads to her restaurant, cooks a well-received special, and then enjoys some adult time with her husband at Roy Choi's A-Frame.

Finally, the two chefs rejoin Top Chef-dom in L.A. and find a ravishing Padma Lakshmi, Hugh Acheson in a Gant Rugger blazer (in case you were wondering), and Emeril Lagasse in the kitchen. Then, in comes Tom, ready for the big reveal, the winner of Last Chance Kitchen. And the winner is…

KRISTEN!!!

Are you all happy? Your girl is in the final!

Padma wastes no time in presenting the chefs' penultimate challenge -- they're going to take over Tom Colicchio's restaurant, Craft, and cook three-course meals. Oh, and Tom will be expediting. This challenge is reminiscent of one of the three "ultimate chef tests" issued during the season premiere, but none of these chefs were in Tom's group then, so it's fresh for everyone.

Could someone explain sushi to me?? I have been afraid to try it because, i am confused about the cooking or Non cooking prep of sushi....it looks so good, and want to at least try it, but what type should a beginner start with....i love seafood in general...is there a way to ensure your sushi is not laden with things that could make you sick....i had a smoothie last summer from a popular fast food restaurant and got salmonella....once you have had that, you never want to revisit it....is sushi raw fish and could itcontain salmonella or other bacteria if not handled properly, but how would i know?? But still would love to try it.....

FlutterBy Sashimi is raw fish often on a pad of rice.  Sushi may contain raw fish, but not necessarily.   Try a cucumber roll (kappamaki) as it is only cucumbers rolled in rice with, of course, the seaweed wrap.  California roll is avocado and crab meat (cooked of course) rolled in rice/seaweed wrap.

Try those with Miso soup....that is a good way to break into eating Japanese food.

Beautifully written, Mr. Yan!  My husband and I have been fans of yours for years.  (I won't say how many.)  We're both from the Bay Area and remember your show clearly.  Your show influenced the cooking in our home.  We ate healthier and had delicious meals based upon your show.  I LOVED seeing you as a judge.  I hope we see more of you on TC.

I remember watching "Yan Can Cook"-I loved that show!  Looking forward to the finale; I had these two pegged from the beginning to beat everyone else.  Go for it, Brooke and Kristen!

Working Kitchens is generally pretty brutal and not for the faint of heart.  I've also seen talented women come into a Kitchen being relegated to Desserts because it's assumed they can do it better than the line cooks.  Dealing with adolescent attitudes daily and having to work twice as hard to get recognition is I'm certain a huge obstacle for most women.  Who wants to work someplace where you you don't feel valued or relegated off to the corner?

Wish TC would have a season where the 2 last losing chefs would compete against eachother (i.e., Sheldon and whoever loses next week's finale) - sort of how ICA did an IC Redemption to find their nest IC!

mcoffee4@yahoo.com Well they had a Top Chef All stars season, season 8 I think? I didn't really watch it, they brought back to many people I didnt like.

Thrilled there will be another female Top Chef and even happier that two of my favorite chefs from this season made the finals. Next week will be fantastic!

Sheldon for Fan Favorite of All Time. The happy Menehune warrior is a sweet antidote to the macho posturing that seems fairly rampant and his food seemed to delight and surprise more often than not. Next time, maybe avoid all eye contact with ol' blue eyes, bruddah!

Without Sheldon, I don't even care who wins next week.  I won't be watching.

fsdedrick Sheldon only made it this far because of the restaraunt wars debacle. His last 3 challenges were underperfomances.

Looks to be a fantastic finale, can't wait!
