Anything You Can Cook I Can Cook Better
Season 4 started with the new chefs arriving in this year's host city, Chicago. They were treated to deep dish pizza at the original Pizzeria Uno and got to know each other a bit better and, of course, scope out the competition. During conversation, two of the chefs, Zoi and Jennifer, revealed that they are a couple -- a Top Chef first! The chefs were interrupted by Padma and Tom, who were ready to welcome them and give them their first Quickfire Challenge: to create their own signature deep dish pizza. But first, the chefs arrived at what they thought was the home of their first guest judge, who was none other then Chef Rocco DiSpirito. The chefs created dishes, both sweet and savory. Padma and Rocco divided the chefs into two groups: their favorite and least favorite. In the Elimination Challenge, these two groups would compete against each other, head-to-head. The challenge? To reinvent a classic dish. The chefs chose from dishes like lasagne to souffle. While some of the chefs embraced the challenge, others were a bit rusty. In the end Stephanie's reinvention of Duck a L'Orange won over the palates of guest judge Rocco DiSpirito and special guest Anthony Bourdain, while Nimma's oversalted Shrimp Scamp sent her packing. The premiere brought lots of surprises including the show's first competing couple and the news that the chefs were allowed to bring $200 worth of ingredients to keep in a locker.
