Hung Huynh: Not Top Sous-Chef

Angelo's sous-chef describes helping to create a finale meal over the phone.

September 16, 2010

Bravotv.com: I know you’ve been watching all season, did you want to be chosen by any specific chef? What was your reaction to being chosen by Angelo?

I wanted to work with Angelo! I like his intensity and we have similar styles.

Bravotv.com: What did you think when you found out he was sick/you’d be getting direction over the phone?

I didnt know what to expect. I just knew I could not win again, even if Angelo were not to come at all.

Bravotv.com: We didn’t really see you nervous about finishing all the prep in time, were you worried at all?

I was not nervous at all. I did as much as I could following Angelo's directions. I did have a Plan B if he couldn't make it the second day.

Bravotv.com: Was there any sort of competition between you, Michael, and Ilan since you’ve all won Top Chef before and you’re competitive people? Vying for the title of Top Sous-Chef?

I dont think so. Of course we all wanted to be top sous-chef, but we understood that we are there to help and we are not competing against each other.

Bravotv.com: Angelo says you were very patient with him on the phone. What was your strategy for executing Angelo’s vision? How much influence did you have on the menu?

My job was to follow orders, try to see his vision, and execute it. I didn't have much influence since I had similar vision and flavor profiles. I agreed with most of it.

Bravotv.com: What was it like competing in a finale again?

I wanted to help Angelo win! It was fun and nerve-wracking! I wanted to win as if it was my finale.

Is there anything Angelo did that you would have done differently? As creative people, we all would have done it differently one way or another. Angelo did a great job.

Bravotv.com: When you found out who won — what did you think?

I was not happy that I was not Top Sous-Chef! Ha!

Bravotv.com: Did you get to taste all the food? Do you think the judges made the right decision?

No I didn't get to taste all the food. If I were judge, maybe, maybe not.

Bravotv.com: Anything else you’d like to add?

My last day at Ajna Bar will be September 17th! I will be staying in NYC! Stay tuned for more info.

I would lay odds that one of the main reasons Angelo did not win his season is because the judges tasted a little too much "Hung" in the food and therefore could not award Angelo the title. It would have been unfair to Kevin and Ed to have to compete with Hung. Nuff said.

Hung, You did the work of two people. Angelo had everything going for him - Singapore and You - Angelo AKA Asian Man, made himself sick. I think he had to have a reason if he did not win - he got it with being sick. Angelo knew you could pull it off - doing the prep. What would have happened if he got Ilan? It would have been very sad. Good to see you back.

Too bad Hung can't come back on Top Chef all-stars. I could watch him run around a kitchen all day long :-)

You & Michael V are my all time fav top chefs. You guys really deserve to be top chefs vs all the mee that was before and after. You proved yourself again here!

I totally agree! Hung, and Michael V. were extraordinary!

Hung,
I could watch you chop and run around at warp speed all day long. You truly are a cooking marvel in the kitchen. Angelo was extremely lucky to have you on his team! You are amazing!!

Hung thank you so much for making the finale work. We loved seeing you again and we appreciated tremendously your helping Angelo. He was my favorite, I'm a big fan of his attitude and his drive, and I was so sorry that he didn't win. Still, it made a huge difference to have you there. I would vote for both of you!!!!

Hung --- You're the Man!
I, as the other posters, have been a fan of Hung's fron the beginning. Hung showed class, style and patience with no hint of ego in his sous chef duties.

I wonder how Hung feels about the current game wherein cheftestants have the opportunity to win terrific cash prizes along the way. These sure beat autographed books from the chef-judges!

Good Luck Hung in your future endeavors.

I'm a huge fan or yours Hung and I think you did an awesome job. I hope one day to meet you. I am studying to be a Chef and I do enjoy watching you cook. You did a great job. Keep it up!

hung did a great job and proved he can do the job of two chefs. he was classy and respectful! give him his own show.

Hung, I thought you were a terrific aide to Angelo. I loved your energy and your passion. I could see it in every camera shot. Since you were so competitive and often unhelpful to other chefs during your season on TC, I was afraid that you might not be fully committed to Angelo. But you were amazing. I will follow you anywhere, so keep us posted.

I know it is a game and the rules can change outcomes....But here are my questions.

I would also love to undertstand what instructions you were given as sous chefs. How much influence you were allowed to have. I ask that because I wonder whether Kevin would have won without Michael. I wonder how much influence he wielded in the design of the menu and the preparation of the food. Kevin rarely made food that was outstanding in earlier episodes. And I wonder if Ed would have had a better chance if he DID NOT have Ilan. I don't believe Ilan showed the energy and committment that you did. You could see it when he was making the cake.

I think you did an amazing job of helping Angelo in an extremely tricky situation. It was also the luck of the game that you two worked together. Congratulations for being so smart and helpful.

These questions are never asked but I will dare ask them. It would be interesting to know if you guys get to split the prize or get paid for your participation by the TC producers. Or, is the publicity and exposure and travel experiences pay enough.

Hung you rocked like always... Thank you for helpin out angelo.. I was routing for him but everyone rocked... Congrats to Kevin he def was there to bring it.. Hung you and Angelo should open up a restaurant in the city.. I would DEF eat there... Your guys style is right up my allie

Hung, as always, I believe you can get out of any jam in the kitchen. Good luck to you in all your endeavors.I look forward to seeing you in the media again.
