Tom Colicchio

Tom Colicchio thanks fans for their well wishes.

on Mar 23, 20110

Editor's Note: Tom is a new father again! He and his wife Lori, as well as sons Dante and Luka, welcomed new son Mateo Lev yesterday.  He'd like all to know that both mother and baby are doing well, and he appreciates all the well wishes they've been receiving.  As you all can imagine, he's had no time to blog about this week's episode, but he'll do his best to post it in the next day or two.

I would still like to see Tom blog about this episode because I really want to understand why Antonia went home. I think she really stretched herself here but it was obvious Bravo wanted both boys in the finale just like when it was obvious both Voltaggio brothers would be pitted against eachother. It seems Tom skipped blogging this episode and went straight to the finale which is upsetting. I hope it's not because of the whole possible Wolfgang Puck vote switch. That would be really disappointing and make me think less of the show in general.

To all the revisionist historians on this blog....Richard was NOT the best chef his season. Stephanie won as many elimination challenges as he did, and crushed him in the final. Enough! The best chef that year was Stephanie, pure and simple. And, as her James Beard honor confirms, she continues to be an amazing chef.

I wanted to see Antonia in the final two. Cooking for Morimoto, she should have had her choice of FRESH fish.

I believe that when you start your own network and post your own prize money then you get to make the rules. Personally I have been following team Blais and have read the posts. You are the first I have heard complain about it. Bravo keep it coming...your doing a great job. You have turned the Food Network boring! Tom Congrats on the baby!

Love your show season after season! I just finished watching the finale and I cried when Richards name was announced as Top Chef. I absolutely love your array of guest judges through out the season especially Lidia. I am hoping for another season of wonderful cuisine and nail biting challenges. Tom, congratulations to you and your beautiful wife on the birth of your third son. Salute!

I'm posting this on Tom's blog even though he hasn't replied yet, because at least in years past he read the comments and respected the opinion of his viewers.

On just about every show this season I've been saddened by the level of abuse and mean-spiritness that is being encouraged, and this last show was no different. Forcing contestants to stay up all night? That's internationally recognized as a form of torture. Making them work in woefully inadequate and unsafe kitchens? Allowing a "winner" to stick it to their competitors by allowing them to assign restrictions/challenges that will most hurt?

I'm all for challenges that force the contestants to work with limited foods and equipment, allowing them to rely on their ingenuity and technique to succeed. And imposing surprise restrictions or twists by the draw of a knife or otherwise random selection is fun. But there's a clear line between a challenge and sadistic cruelty, and top chef appears to have crossed that line.

Saw Richard and Mike on The Today Show this morning. Mike was SO smug. That together with him opening his own new restaurant must mean that he won Top Chef. The thought is nauseating. I won't watch tonight. Watching arrogant Mike win out over so many other talented chefs, so many of whom seem to be nice, is completely disheartening. What a bummer! I feel really bad for Richard, Antonia, Carla, and Dale. They are all so much more deserving than Mike. It's pretty clear from Tom and Gail's bashing of Richard in their blogs that he doesn't stand a chance. When he does win the final elimination, they don't even call it a win. And if you read the TV Guide article, on the Final Bite challenge Wolfgang Puck changed his vote in favor of Antonia to Mike after Tom talked to him during a break. Why does Tom favor Mike so much? Is it because he is a cocky Italian from New Jersey?

Playing not to be the worst is the real bore, not the level of win/lose predictability. Bad challenges and strange decisions make for bad, boring food. The show doesn't always eliminate the chef who produces the worst food, or who fails to produce anything at all. The level of luck needed to make the finale undercuts the idea that the finalists are truly the most deserving. Eighteen was too many chefs, and speaking for myself, I just wanted to see again a few of the chefs eliminated in the first few episodes. That worked out well.

I don't like Mike either. I find him gross and this because he burps and farts constantly (as noted in a few episodes) which to me makes his food seem that much less palatable. I did note though that he said he had worked at several restaurants to up his game prior to the finale and clearly did a lot of research into island food.

I'm curious, Tanya, how you can tell from your living room how Mike's food was so much poorer. When did they addl this smellovision/tasteovision feature on your TV?

Just wanted to comment on the comments - how, how, how can everyone be so adamantly sure in their opinions about the relative superiority or inferiority of a dish that they themselves never taste? Seems like the two best approaches are to either decide to trust the verdict of the judges who actually eat the food or just give up on the whole reality-TV cooking contest contrivance altogether, turn the TV off, and maybe go cook something in your own kitchen.

How interesting that Mediocre Mike has rebounded in the several not-so "Finale" challenges, thanks to the break in game. If other rejects were given the same chance, they may have prevailed as well. All season Mike has been a has-been just squeaking by. Whereas, Antonia excelled all season barely being in the bottom 3. It's a true pity that Antonia was robbed in the 11th hour. Richard's well deserved win wasn't even acknowledged by Tom (The Supreme Being) as a win. Richard was just told he made into the final. What about a little more pomp and circumstance, Tom? How about a little prize money? If Mike won 5k in the morning QF, certainly Richard deserved some moulah to go with the win in the final elim, right? btw: Tom - you are so done with this show, it isn't even funny. Look at your puss throughout the season. If you hate to be away from your family, stay home and allow a somebody else to he head judge (who doesn't play favorites with other New Jersey Boys). Thank you and good night!

It was clear from the start that you were going to boot off Antonia regardless how well she cooked. You obviously had your mind made up already. I thought you were suppose to impartial? You are always saying how in the end the food is what matters well apparently NOT.Obviously it is all about the ratings and not the cooking. How coincidental that Antonia was given rancid fish to cook with but disposed of it and made a great dish even according to Wofgang and she still got canned.Imagine if Richard had received an inferior ingredient he would still be whining about it. Who would want to work in Richard's or Mike's kitchen anyway??Richard is such a downer and is so negative.I won't be watching the finale bc neither of YOUR choices are worthy of the title.

Tiffany & Karla gone. How predictable Top Chef judges, you guys are so biased -- typical America. We are So Use to your bias by now. Tiffany meals only too cool on the beach -- and the other guys food was undercooked. Tom, you were the only one that said it was too sweet. It seemed everyone else had positive things to say. You rather eat undercooked fish I guess. In the past I really loved this show.

Congrats Tom, I'm sure you and yours are extremely happy. I watch your show all the time and have a question. Here goes, why is it that after the judges talk about whose dis h they like and why and the chefs are called back out you all ( judges) sit there and look ( or try to ) so angry, disappointed, and unhappy? The delay in giving the verdict isn't spell binding, it's annoying because it appears so contrived. Maybe some thought on this issue will reveal another way to make it appear as if "something" is happening. I came to the conclusion that if the judge doesn't like the dish for whatever reason then the chef is axed. But...the message you guys are sending is if I don't like this, or I think it's too salty, doesn't have enough depth etc. it's no good. Really?

TheBK
TheBK

How are people saying that Top Chef has become predictable or complaining about who does or doesn't "deserve" to be in the finale? If it were predictable then you could have skipped the entire season just to tune in for the final three culinary heavyweights of Blais, Jen, and Angelo. How interesting would that be? It's much more compelling to see a dark horse like Isabella or Carla step up their game big time since their season, or to see Dale T. or Tiffani F. change their personality for the better and be a totally different person from their original season. And the chefs that truly deserve to be in the finale are the ones who can survive the exhausting gauntlet of challenges in their entirety and never be the worst on any given day.

This season has been so hard to watch because of the 18 chefs this season there were maybe only 2 or 3 that I wouldn't mind getting the axe. But in the end only one of them can win and the odds are totally stacked against it being any individual one of the 18. So just enjoy the ride, realize how difficult it is for any single chef to not irrevocably tank on any challenge, and trust that the judges (who are actually tasting the food) know what they're doing.

Congrats on the new addition to the family, Tom. Here's to a great final showdown.

Did anyone notice that Antonia did coconut curry in both the quick fire and the final bite? How many curries did she do over the season, I wonder. Mike continues to be creative and challenge himself...I think the correct choice was made and will lead to an epic finale.

Can Tom comment on whether Richard was officially the "Winner" or not for this last challenge. There is some debate on it b/c they just said Richard is moving on but didn't officially call him the winner.

The integrity of Bravo and Tom C are very questionable. It seems obvious to me that Tom C is no longer interested in TC, he should be replaced with Eric Ripert. I have repected his honesty throughout this season.

If Wolfgang allowed Tom C. to change his vote to allow a person that deserves to be in the finale, is very disturbing. I am surprised that Wolfgang didn't stand up for his vote. I applaud the other three that wouldn't change their votes. Same on Tom C., it is time for Eric to take over.

I just want to know why it always the women who go. I know in one season a woman won but the majority of the time if the vote is close you can put money on it that the woman will be the one who goes. Her dish was better but maybe spicy compared to bland wasn't good. Even the person who asked for the dish said it was not what she asked for.

This is one of the few comments I've read that is a legitimate question/doubt. It wasn't a comment about how good food was that commenter didn't taste. It wasn't just based on personalities. It is legit and I just wanted to thank you for it. Hopefully it will be answered because I was wondering about this as well. (and for the record, I cannot stand Mike and would have MUCH preferred Antonia to be in the finals, but it is what it is.)

Tom, Lori, Dante, and Luka, congratulations on your new family member!

I was sad to see Antonia go, but I didn't see any unfairness in the episode. There's no question that cooking Morimoto's last supper was going to be the toughest, since none of these chefs specialize in Asian food. By winning the quickfire, Mike got the advantage of assigning away that most difficult option. I think the show recognized that, and the "last bite" twist was a great way to give the final two an equal sudden-death playing field.

I thought the editing showed a clear cliff-hanger: three votes Mike, three votes Antonia, Wolfgang Puck hadn't decided yet and saw good things about both choices. Both were good dishes, and with a different group of judges, the decision might have come out differently. But folks, suggesting that Wolfgang Puck couldn't make up his own mind, or that Tom bullied him or over-rode him in voting--this is WOLFGANG PUCK. He's been at the top of the industry for thirty years. I think he can hold his own in a roomful of chefs and food folks.

So, fried chicken that's not really fried and the skin is falling off and meat is dry. And that dish beats out Antonia? Miso was salty, ok. Chefs have gone home for that, but it was described as a bit salty. Not, I can't eat this. Antonio stretched herself for this one and she goes home? WRONG.
