Great Steak-pectations

Grayson shines, Ty-Lor cuts, and Heather annoys.

Dec 7, 2011

One sidetone about Heather. Apparently everyone's turning on her. As a super-loud and bossy female, I didn't find much wrong with her attitude, but it would've been nice to see it result in the proper cooking of the steak. And that brings us to her bestie, Ty-Lor.

OK, onto the steak. Ty-Lor was mostly responsible for the actual protein. Unfortunately while getting out all the marrow on prep day, he sliced right through his finger. And it was bad.

See where Ty-Lor ranks among Bravo's biggest foodie klutzes of all time.

Like any badass chef, Ty-Lor kept working, but eventually had to get stitches at night, so he didn't really sleep before the event. When the steaks actually had to be cooked, there was a bit of a breakdown in communication and they were fired t the wrong time, resulting in unevenly and inconsistently-cooked steaks. The protein was basically ruined. The saving grace of the entree was Nyesha's sauce. She redeemed herself from the Quickfire Challenge. Yay, Nyesha! Luckily for Ty-Lor, Whitney made a weak potato gratin. Some of her potatoes were raw, and the judges were tasked with deciding which was a bigger offense -- poor protein or raw vegetable. I felt for Hugh, remaining objective while obviously hurt that his mentee was facing elimination. Don't worry, Hugh! She has another chance in Last Chance Kitchen. And Ty-Lor lived to cook another day.

Did you agree with the judges' decision? And how do you like your steak? If you don't say medium rare, don't worry.

Couldn't anyone else have helped Ty-lor??? The dude had cut his hand, had no sleep and still didn't shirk his responsibility. How bout a little assist? Glad he didn't get voted off. Sheesh!

I think Heather should be called out for using the same receipe twice. Where's the creativity? And you want to insinuate that Beverly is lazy?

I definitely agree Whitney should have gone home. I mean, c'mon, messing up potatoes au gratin? Chef Acheson should have sent her off to the local school cafeteria insteading of Italy or wherever it was. BTW, I don't eat a lot of steak, but when I do, it's medium/medium well.

The edit may highlight Heather's less than nice attitude but it sure looks like she thinks she is on Hell's Kitchen in the role of Chef Ramsey. I don't see the leadership, just bossy noise.

Agreed, Heather reminds me of a bully at my old school. I'd believe that top chef highlights culinary but most important personal skills. If you'd lack of either one, your kitchen is doomed and heading for disaster. Maybe ratings have a lot to do with the diva attitude but at the end of day, top chef should be who is the chef that leads by example and not the biggest big, bad bully. My 2 cents ....

I can't BELIEVE Heather makes Edward's cake AGAIN, and wins!!! Use your own recipe. And no re-do's. It's a cooking show! Just made my blood boil!!!! Not that I'm a big fan of Ed's, but come on, man!!!

I'm confused...Heather won using Ed's desert recipe but Ed was in the bottom three.

I don't mind a loud or bossy female, as long as they contribute something to the work effort. Heather seems to just be in bitch mode pretty much all the time. I don't dispute her work history or accomplishments, but I think I would pretty much hate working for her. As the saying goes, you get better results with a little honey, honey.

I agree with the decision. A steak is only as good as the sauce it comes with. Love that the color and appearance of the dish was mentioned. I love, love, love steak!!! Medium :)

Beverly Kim deserves her own kitchen, -- and shrimp company. She'll win it all. But still have no personality.

It would nice, as viewers, to be able to taste the meals since it appears this show has become more of a popularity challenge rather than a cooking challenge. I have watched every season of Top Chef, but I am becoming increasingly discouraged by the changes they have made to the show.

I wasn't happy, in fact I was left irritated at the end of the episode for this reason: I feel for Ty. In my opinion, he has the hardest task in the challenge-- grilling 200 pieces of steaks(the main course of the night), in the heat with an injured hand and no sleep. And how does his team-mates help him? By screwing up his dish when he was grilling the meat outside!! I am especially irritated by the bossy Lindsay, who took charge, and heat Ty's steaks in the oven way too early, without even telling Ty!! And she didn't even come out and take responsibility for it or apologize. How does she sleep at night?

Is anyone else getting tired of group challenges? Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel with uninspired new challenges, maybe Team Top Chef should revisit some of the more interesting ones from earlier seasons if there is a Season Ten.

Team Beverly. Heather also stated that Beverly continues to cook asian dishes. Heather then made the same cake as she did in a previous episode. Perhaps, Heather just sees Beverly as her competition and that is why she is such a jerk.

Heather shouldn't have won the Venza for a cake variation that was previously served at that girl's sweet sixteen party! The win should've gone to Chris or Nyesha, because didn't they serve the most important components, the steak and sauce? Then why was this episode called "Higher STEAKS"?!

Anyone who stabs him/hershelf and keeps on going without giving up deserves bonus points.

So glad Ty-lor did not get voted off the TC island. He was great for taking responsibility free and clear for the steaks. I am worried though that he needs to show leadership enough to identify a wing man/woman that he can count on to fire the steaks. I didn't understand Tom's suggestion to wrap the steaks assuming they were cut thicker. That looked like a honkin huge piece of steak to me so maybe he was thinking smaller diameter, but thicker. I can't imagine cooking for 200 people, let alone trying to plate all of them especially a temperature/time sensitive protein like steak...and serving them to cattle barons! Regarding the au gratin, reading how real chefs make this dish correctly makes me appreciate the dish much more and never want to try cooking it from scratch:)

One of the first things about being a chef these people should have learned is the basics of food safety. I can say with certainty that if any of these people cooked for me, and I walked into the kitchen and saw what they do, I would fire them on the spot. Grilling what are supposed to be medium rare steaks with a bandana on your head dripping sweat into the grill...gross. If you can not practice good hygiene in the kitchen, you do not need to be cooking period. Time and time again these people are prepping veggies, meats, etc with their bare hands and the dish is not cooked to a temperature that would stave off any bacteria it could accumulate..GROSS. If even the fast food arena of horribleness can use food safety principles, why are these chef's so far off course?

I have watched every season of Top Chef and have enjoyed every other season except this one. What happened to this being a cooking competition show and not a popularity contest or keeping contestants in the game only because they know they will get a good show out of them?

Totally digusted with this season. Too many team challenges and not enough showing of how these people can really cook.

Heather is the ultimate playground bully! She steals recipes and calls it her own; she picks on people who have enough class not to join in her anti-Asian antics. Karma is going to such badly for her. This bigot has to go!

So many viewers hating on Heather but I like her style. She's be sticking around the later episodes that's for sure. contestants need to be more like her. Speak up if you don't agree with what you see.

Is it just me, or is there a lot of crying and not enough wowing on this season of Top Chef??
