Episode Seven: Room Of The Future

NATALIE My 2108 Space was based on the idea that everything was on a hydraulic system. My eating/sitting area would be on a platform that you could choose to raise. I wanted to create a classic but futuristic space that was very polished.

ANDREA The concept behind my design was modular housing, or creating a pod to live in. I am really pleased with how fun this space is. I loved the pink set against natural wood, and black and white. It was a tough challenge, but I love the pod doors and window openings, the birch floors, marble tables, and the Eames pink rocker. It was fun working with my carpenter, Bruiser, and I appreciate the help of my fellow designers who helped clean up my space in the last few minutes.

EDDIE The concept behind my design was to create the lobby of a cloning facility. It was a mix of modern and traditional. The paint splattered walls were inspired by an Albert Hadley fabric by Hinson & Co. It was a super fun room to design.

NATHAN I'd describe my space as bold, brave, conscious, comfortable and luxurious. I incorporated hints of the past through shape and form and tried to introduce new ideas on function and form. ONDINE Since design has not significantly changed in the past 100 years my space has a classic design with futuristic elements. In my future, global warming has set in so windows that let in natural sunlight are a thing of the past. The screens that flank the entrance of the room are thermal panels designed to protect the room from intense heat. The fireplace remains the traditional focal point of the room, but is now a cooling element instead. There is a fan cooling system above and a light simulator on the left wall to provide a substitute for sunlight. The abundance of lamps reflects the fashion of the time in which light is nostalgic and a coveted item. The paisley wallpaper and mid-century furnishings highlight the idea that the future of design, like the history of design, reflects fashions of the past.

PRESTON The theme of my room was "Space Hotel." The color palette consisted of shades of grey and black, mixed with reds and silver. The living room/ dining room area was combined by using traditional elements in a futuristic way. Crown molding was applied to the dining room wall from floor to ceiling and was meant to be used as a voice activated room service wall, thus eliminating the need for human preparation of food and drink. A greenhouse area was placed in the dining area to create artificial sunlight for plant growth. The living room area combined rosewood, silks and leathers with literature and glass pieces from the past. I created windows allowing the client to see galaxies pass by on their way to the unknown. The overall feel was transitional, combing classic elements with contemporary in a futuristic fantasy world.
