A Trooper Or A Drooper

Although I think we can all agree that the key ingredients to any successful party include fun friends, yummy food, tasty drinks, great music, and a neat location, this may not necessarily occur to the interior designer doubling as a party planner.
While many party planners double as interior designers for a night or weekend extravaganza, few interior designers are invited to venture into party planning. While this week's challenge of designing a crisp party had to be more enjoyable than redesigning last week's filthy garage -- it was important in that it forced many of the contestants to stretch their creative ingenuity in an altogether new direction.
Think of building a wall around your field of knowledge. When you are learning to think in new ways it adds confidence and expands your horizons. Thus, the wall you build extends far and wide. When you are holding fast to a tried and true pattern, your field of knowledge is not increasing.
Thus, the wall you build has nowhere to go but around and around the same familiar field, ultimately isolating you from the sun, the fun, an entire world of ideas out there awaiting your discovery. Since Goil did not know what a cabana is, I was pleased when he mentioned Dorothy Draper as an inspiration. (I have always adored her.)
Goil could have spoken up more on the subject of executing his ideas though. If you think two vs. one is hard, wait until you're navigating an entire room of consultants, each an advocate for their own agendas, budgets, and creative designs. Two against one is no excuse. Ten against one is maybe an excuse but when you know your idea rocks...
The doorman? Loved him, really set the mood for the party. The flowers in both tents? Loved them not so much. The arrangements in general wilted beneath too much thinking, and Andrea's "sculptural arrangements" looked like maybe they had fallen over.
Overall, both tents delivered the goods but as an overall package, Matt, Carisa, and Michael's event took this week's Top Design. By the way -- it was probably obvious that I wasn't feeling well during the filming of this week's episode.
Everyone said I was a "trooper" but I felt like more of a drooper. Lord.
