Episode Ten: Finale Part 2

Product details for the Finale Part 2.

ONDINE For the final challenge, I designed a sophisticated yet hip, eclectic but comfortable, three-bedroom home. The mix of mid-century modern furniture, graphic wall treatments and contained blasts of color created a unified look throughout the house. The overall aura was fun, young and exciting. At its center, the living room included an oatmeal upholstered sofa with a matching pair of chairs and a classic teak coffee table all of it from 1950's Denmark. It is always my want to mix complimentary periods and styles wherever possible, so I also included in the room an intricately carved Indonesian sideboard with black-lacquered end tables and a 4 ft bronze sculpture of the Indian god Shiva. Large modern abstract paintings highlighted the double-high ceiling. I draped the windows in sumptuous ikat silk drapes that offered a deliciously fresh take on the traditional Indonesian patterns I've always loved. The landing served as the family room, with black and silver wallpaper meant to convey an art-deco-meets-1970's-glam sensibility.

I included in the room a pair of vintage sofas upholstered in bright pink wool, and a black lacquered, Ming coffee table, which I set atop a woolen zebra rug. I included a thee-dimensional, 1970's-style metal wall sculpture that added to the pop glamour. In the dining room, I chose black-and-cream wallpaper with a mum pattern that was very graphic in its design. I selected black bamboo chairs for the large Desiron double pedestal dining table. Above it, I installed a 1970's-inspired, bronze chandelier from Jonathan Adler, which served as the focal point of the room. Upstairs, I papered the master bedroom with a striking gold and turquoise damask pattern. I designed a mirrored headboard, with the reflective pieces set at different angles. The idea was to give the small room a greater sense of openness while also creating a chic bed.

For the windows, I used gorgeous silk drapes adorned with beautiful, oversized, damask medallions. I chose dark oil paintings of landscapes for the walls, and a large Venetian mirror for above the dresser, reflecting the mirrored headboard and adding to the illusion of a much larger room. The second bedroom was to serve as both a study and a guest room. I did the whole room in black and white: Black-and-white floral wallpaper adorned two of the walls; a white sofa with black trim served as the guest bed opposite a beautiful, black-lacquered desk and a Holly Hunt-style chair. I installed an ornate, black-framed, octagonal mirror, again to create the perception of a larger space. The kid's room was painted with fun yellow and white vertical stripes. The bed was tucked behind a wall with my version of a Moorish -style arch creating the perfect fun hideaway for a little girl. The arch opening was flanked with orange and pink linen curtains adding color and coziness. The addition of French bookshelf in white and mercury glass pendant light gave the room an air of sophistication that would not take away from its colorful fun.

PRESTON This was by far the most challenge space to contend with. I broke up the downstairs area into three parts- a dining area, a seating area off the kitchen and a downstairs lounge area. All three spaces were of the same color palette, mixing blues, browns, blacks and grays. A bold splash of color was introduced by using a green silk on the drapes in the downstairs lounge and by using bold, blue, grass cloth wallpaper in the dining room. The overall feel was very warm, masculine and transitional. The upstairs contained three rooms which were small and difficult to work with. The master suite was all about the fabric choices. The main focus was the bed due to the size of the room so the bedding, pillows and draped fabric softened the scale of the large bed. The rest of the room was kept simple and elegant and combined silver finish night tables, sconces, drapery and floral accent wallpaper.

The guest suite was sexy and sleek, using elaborate moldings throughout and a simple color palette. The gray, black, white and yellow combination is a safe bet when dressing to impress. The office was fun and cheeky; everything in the room was to scale and stood on its own. Each piece reflected a different style and era and the overall look was meant to symbolize positive creative energy, thus creating an environment where the senses can be fulfilled. In the end the house was fun and creative and every room had a unique look, but the house maintained a consistent feel and the design was suiting to the style of the home.

NATHAN I continued on my idea of a young collectors beach home or weekend getaway from the city. Because the bones or architecture of the townhouse were not the greatest, I really wanted to do things that added individual style to the house.

I Chose to use a metallic ground wallpaper for the entry stair wall and landing wall. By wrapping the wallpaper around the wall it appears that the structure is a cube or monolith. I changed the lower level living room to an entry foyer with a central foyer table on a pedestal base. In the dining room I built a custom parsons style square top table and used camel bone inlay klismos style chairs. The chandelier was custom built by me as well as the painting The upstairs office was intended to show the client's collectors side. My custom shelves were inspired by a pantone color chip in gradation of grey-blues. The art wall was an eclectic mix of mixed media pieces. I designed a custom parsons style daybed for the kid's room and used Jonathan Adler pieces. The wallpaper was tone-on-tone flocked in a geometric design.
