Black Panther Is Inspiring People to Adopt Black Cats and Give Them Names Like Shuri and T’challa

Is there nothing that this movie can’t do?

Black Panther has been breaking box office records, and is inspiring what seems like almost everyone to go see a movie that's based on a comic book. Apparently, it has also been inspiring people to adopt black cats, and gift them with names like Shuri, T’challa and Killmonger — which, yes, are characters in the movie.

Reports of the trend started when a Tumblr user named Gallusrostromegalus wrote that local shelters near her home in Colorado “went from having something like 50-60 black cats between them to having NONE, because they’ve all been adopted out and named after the characters.”

Although data hasn’t been gathered nationwide (or confirmed), it does make sense that a movie about a fierce black cat would inspire animal lovers to want to have a fierce black cat of their own. Or a small little cuddly one. Or a fluffy one with a hilariously bad attitude! Or a spooky one. Whatever.

Black cats have all different types of personalities, and anyone who adopts one is doing a great deed, so we applaud them. After all, black pets in general are historically unwanted — and there's even a phenomenon known as Black Cat Syndrome, based on these kitties' historically negative portrayal in books and movies.

And, while some Tumblr users were questioning whether or not such rapid adoptions were being properly vetted, Gallusrostromegalus replied that the shelters in her area were responsible, and provided support to any future pet owners. Which leaves us with this thought: If you could adopt a black cat, which character would you name him or her after?
