Life is unfair, and there’s no greater proof of this than the fact that Louboutina, affectionately known as New York’s “Hugging Dog,” and her owner, Cesar Fernandez-Chavez, lost their apartment in fire on Christmas afternoon.
For those of you not familiar with Louboutina, she is a five-year-old golden retriever who stands on a corner in Union Square giving strangers hugs. And who says New Yorkers aren’t friendly?
Louboutina and Cesar were out for a walk to CVS on Christmas when a candle tipped over in the apartment next to theirs, on West 19th street, causing their own Chelsea apartment to go up in flames.
Cesar and Louboutina lost everything. In a way, however, it was a Christmas miracle, because according to the New York Daily News, Cesar almost left Louboutina at home for what was supposed to be a quick errand.
Pretty soon after the news broke, a fan of the sweet dog set up a GoFundMe page, which to date, has raised over $60,000. One Pittsburgh resident, Jennifer Fritz, even donated $10,000, even though she doesn’t even know the pair.
2017 has been a year full of bad news, but even still, if the response to the fire is any indication, there is still so much goodness in the world. So much goodness, and so much love. Here’s to 2018 being full of more stories like this one.
