Andy chats with the star of Deck the Halls.

on Nov 21, 2006

It's Thanksgiving weekend, and with the Christmas madness comes a slew of Christmas movies. If I had to see one this weekend I would do two or three shots of Jack Daniels and see Matthew Broderick in Deck the Halls. I was on my way to the airport when I grabbed the ivory-skinned star of stage and screen to sprinkle some Broderick magicdust on Andy's Blog!

HEY MATTHEW

! Hey! Happy Thanksgiving.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! WHAT WILL YOU DO TO CELEBRATE?

I will have dinner with my family -- we're doing my family for thanksgiving and Sarah's for Christmas.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THANKSGIVING DISH?

I do like good old fashioned turkey if it's cooked right. It's hard to get it right. What do you like?

I LIVE FOR STUFFING!

I was going to say that, but I was ashamed because it's just pork fat and carbs. Its nasty but I love it!

ME TOO. SPEAKING OF THINGS I LOVE, YOUR NEW FILM IS A POTENTIAL HOLIDAY CLASSIC... WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY MOVIES? I like "Charlie Brown Christmas." WAIT -- THAT'S NOT A MOVIE WHATSOEVER!

Oh great, because I was going to say how much I love "The Grinch," too! Ok, as for movies there's Miracle On 34th Street and also Scrooge starring Albert Finney from way way back. I saw that when I was a kid -- it scared the shit outta me but I liked it.

YOU HAVE TO WEAR A SPANDEXY SPEEDSKATING SUIT IN DECK THE HALLS. WAS THAT HARD TO NAVIGATE?

Yes! It was kind of embarrassing and I remember the stage direction in the screenplay said "let's just say it looked better when he was in college." It was meant not to look good -- and it was upsetting to read in the stage direction that you are supposed to look bad. And it was 90 degree heat and supposed to be winter. So hot!

I REMEMBER YOU SPLIT TOWN DURING THE SUMMER TO MAKE THIS. WHAT WAS IT LIKE FILMING A CHRISTMAS MOVIE IN THE HEAT?

It's obviously warm and irritating because there's fake white dust everywhere. But at night when it cooled off it became fun and felt like Christmas. With the sun bouncing off fake snow and you're in a big coat and hat its hard to get into the spirit. I can feel your readers clicking elsewhere, by the way.

I ENJOYED YOU SO MUCH IN THE PRODUCERS. WHAT WAS THE MOST UNEXPECTED THING THAT HAPPENED ONSTAGE?

A man died in the audience and I'll never forget that. One of the most amazing things was coming onstage New Year's Eve and Mel Brooks was sitting there playing the judge in the final scene. It was a total surprise.

HEY WAIT.  I WAS THERE THAT NIGHT!

There he was when I walked onstage! When I got close to the judge's bench it was also surprising to see the entire script layed out in front of him!!

FUNNY!! YOU HAVE BEEN IN ABOUT 40 MOVIES. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE(S) BESIDES "DECK THE HALLS"?

Favorite is always hard because they are all so different. I gotta say Ferris Bueller because everybody thinks that. Maybe Election too. And I am also gonna say Max Dugan Returns which was my first movie.

I LOVE THAT ONE! WHAT'S ONE THING ABOUT FERRIS BUELLER THAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW?

Originally one of the last scenes had Ferris at a radio station giving an interview saying he was going to outer space. But the Challenger Explosion happened and it got cut. A lot got cut from that movie.

HOW MANY TIMES A DAY DO YOU GET "HEY FERRIS!" ON THE STREET?

I wouldn't say it's every day anymore but I would say it's four times a week. "Hey Ferris" only happens at baseball games. Most people say "You want to know what my favorite is?" And I say "What's that?" And then they say "The one where you were that cute teenager cutting school".

YOUR DAD JAMES WAS AN ACTOR PERHAPS MOST KNOWN FOR HIS ROLE ON "FAMILY." WHAT DID HE TEACH YOU ABOUT ACTING?

He took it very seriously and he taught me to take it seriously and that it was important. That was the main thing.

DID YOU EVER VISIT THE SET OF "FAMILY" AND SNIFF AROUND KRISTY MCNICHOL?

Yes I did! I was a little young to be sniffing around, if that's what you're implying. I thought she was the coolest person ever. I remember watchig her zooming around the lot in her golfcart and I had a crush on Meredith Baxter Birney with her long blond hair. And Barry Frank, who played the son, was very, very nice to me when I was a boy. Like a big brother.

DID YOU EVER MEET JIMMY MCNICHOL?

(Laughs) I don't think I ever did! I forgot about him until this moment!

I CAN'T LET YOU GO WITHOUT ASKING ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE TEAM. WHO'S YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE MET?

Oooh. That's a tough one. I have a soft spot for Tommy Agee!

WAIT. DID I NOT GIVE YOU A TOMMY AGEE SIGNED BALL ONCE?

I am looking at it! I thought he had sad eyes and I loved him as a kid. I was at a game towards the end of his career and he made a mistake and the crowd booed him and that made me so sad and made me love him all the more.

WELL MATTHEW, IT COULDN'T HAVE MORE FUN INTERVIEWING YOU FOR MY BLOG!!

Have a safe flight! How long will you be in St Louis and what will you do?

I WILL RETURN SUNDAY NIGHT AND I WILL HANG OUT A LOT AND EAT STUFFING AND SEE YOUR MOVIE!

Of Course! That sounds nice!

THANKS MATTHEW AND HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
