Fashion Shows Up

Andy Cohen discusses last night's emotional amfAR event.

Feb 11, 2010

It's a sad beginning to Fashion Week with the news that Alexander McQueen has passed away. What a loss.

When there's a blizzard in NYC and a black tie gala amfAR event that's been on the books for months, a simple mind might wonder whether anyone will show up for the event in the winter madness. Let me answer the question for you: when it's 1000 fashionistas scheduled to appear, they will not only show up, they will be dressed and ready to party.

I was blown away by the wall-to-wall full house of fashion's A-List last night at amfAR's New York Gala. I can't even list names, but just picture every designer and model and star and they were all there on the eve of Fashion Week to pay tribute to Sir Elton John and Natasha Richardson.

For Sir Elton, Lady Gaga appeared on top of a white piano wearing a white bikini covered in something resembling melted pearls, captivating the room with some performance art and an original VivaGlam song. The jaded crowd was into it. She is something.

The tribute to Natasha was stunning. Mathilde Krim began it, and brought out Natasha's mom Vanessa Redgrave, who was the most beautiful woman in the room. It was a captivating tribute to her daughter, and a very public display of her great love and admiration for Natasha. At the end of her speech, Redgrave brought out Meryl Streep, who had the guts to follow Gaga's song with one of her own. She sang a traditional Irish song called "Good Night and Joy Be With  You All," about  remembering a friend, and being there to raise a glass when she wasn't. It was raw, a capella, and from the heart.

There was not one dry eye in the house and a thunderous ovation followed for Streep, Redgrave, and for Natasha. It was an emotional tribute befitting an amazing woman.

Here's a picture I took of Vanessa Redgrave with John Benjamin Hickey at our table. Redgrave is a stunner!

Everyone seemed to congregate at the Boom Boom Room after the affair, and the blizzard seemed like yesterday's news. Today it's sunny and great, and Fashion Week begins.

See you tonight at Midnight with Jackie Collins and New Jersey Housewife Teresa! (Kim missed her plane.)

Great blog about your late, great friend. Please tell us about the "fashionistas" who wore open toed shoes or sandals in a blizzard. Lady Gaga looks like she stinks. Please get close enough to her at an event and tell us if she does. Latex and all of those fake materials do not BREATHE.

Glad it was a packed house, sounds like a lovely night!

I just wanna say Im in LOVE with Andy Cohen...although Im under 30, im very close enough to 30...I think we would have a blast... S.Kynnedi

Kim missed her plane?? That's funny!

andy, can you (or anyone else who reads this) please post your email address? i want to write an email to u for viewer mail. Thanks!

Dear andy,

I think you are a very funny man and I would also like a e-mail address to reach you and maybe discuss some topics of pop culture with you. Any way you have can get my address so hit me up bro!

Theresa will be there? Move all tables out of the way! Thanks for sharing the moving details of the event.

Oh how I admired Natasha Richardson. Not only was she a beauty, but a great actress as well. I'm always happy to read anything that you write about her. It's quite obvious that you loved her dearly. I'm sure the event was bittersweet. I've really enjoyed reading your blogs and getting to know you better. I love Bravo!

Hey andy I think your incredible however if you have a personally email address that would be great because as a viewer I have some ideas I would like to throw out.

Yes, Vanessa Redgrave is a beautiful woman and so was her daughter Natasha. Both wonderful talented women. Such a loss with Natasha.

Andy, I think there should be a housewives of Dallas! How awesome would that be...everything is bigger in Texas

It's wonderful to hear that so many people came out during the storm to honor Natasha Richardson. It's a tragedy that still is hard to believe. Gaga is wonderful, but oh what I would have given to have seen and heard Meryl Streep's tribute. You seem to be the type of person that would have highly valued the opportunity to witness that tribute in person, and thank you for sharing it with us. On a ligher note, loved your show with Jackie Collins and Teresa Giudice last night. No matter who you have on your shows are wonderful, but you have such a talent of putting two people together who end up being entirely entertaining and play so well off each other (my fav duo is stil RuPaul and Ricki Lake!). You're always my Mazel of the week !!

The only fashion statement I wish to make is that I absolutly love the tight 60's suit Mr.Cohen wears on His show! To be honest I only watch to see Mr.Cohen! Sooooo handsome & a body that doesn't quit! The only change I would make is if Mr.Cohen could unbutton at least one more button to expose His gorgeous hairy chest!!!

Vanessa Redgrave = most beautiful woman in the world. Was and is.

vicky listen...you say no one understands you. well Jehovah does he says... understand yourself. You cannot possibly give advice and make judgement on others until you fully understand yourself. give advice, dont boss around. its about understanding. like gretchen cryed at your daughters trials. she used here experience in a compassionate way. so should you. know what is true and use it effectivly. you will understand in time, but for now, judge not and you will not be judged. people matter. All people. hope you get this message. A Friend.

you should do a show about the Hispanic family like ours lol so much dramma
