We kept Michaele in the show because she has a compelling life story, distinct relationships with the other women, and most especially because she represents a very real example of the inextricably intertwined worlds of political connections with social hierarchy. To the people who might excoriate us and say we're making Michaele famous or glorifying what she did: 'here's what' -- we don't make shows to make people famous and as a corollary, we don't view being on a television show either as a reward or a punishment. That's up to the individuals who choose to do so and the people who choose to watch and react.
What happened at the White House plays out towards the end of our series, as it occurred towards the end of our production cycle. But the stories that unfold in the months before are as compelling -- if not more so. Michaele is one of the many characters whose lives intersect in the series and in real life; it would be unfair and unjust to the other women to say that the drama surrounding the Salahis is the focal point of the show; a lot happens, and it is riveting television.
So, before you judge this show, I hope you watch an episode. It is as distinctive from The Real Housewives of the O.C., New York, Atlanta, and New Jersey as the geographic locations themselves. This series features the same great storytelling and strong women with an exceptionally raw and revealing narrative. We could not have possibly imagined what would happen next. We still can't.
Last night's WWHL was actually a lot of fun....except (you knew that was coming!)... Ramona was still kind of clueless and annoying (and a little bitter). Any other time having Ramona on would be fun (but not for reasons Ramona would like), but it just felt disrespectful for Dina. I think it should have been just Dina last night (like you had just Bethany the week before). Or at least Dina and a non-Housewife guest. Having to split the attention and questions between the two of them was jarring, especially being from two different shows. However, I will say that it made me appreciate Dina more and made me think of Ramona as a bit shallow since you 'plugged' what they were 'about'....and it coulnd't have been any more obvious! Ramona...jewelry line..blah blah blah....skin care line...blah blah blah...true faith..etc...look for my 'fitness regimen' at blah blah blah. Then Dina's .....Project LadyBug - bam. That's it. It made the difference between the two really stand out. Ramona was plugging things to make herself more money - and seemed a bit desperately overdressed. Dina looked more casual, comfortable, and straight forward..and while she has other businesses I'm sure, she only plugged LadyBug. Loved RAmona's desperate non-reaction to Rashida Jones' impersonation...too funny!
You know you're reunion show is out of control when Bethenny Frankel is the one who finally says enough of the attacking of Jill. I do really like Kelly, hope someone steps forward and helps her rather than letting her spiral downward.
Love Dina and Ramona on WWHN, not so much Grandma!
Confused when you say, "When we decided to extend The Real Housewives franchise to Washington, D.C., the country had just elected its first African-American President. In a time of great change for the country and D.C., we were increasingly interested in exploring the nexus of politics, society and race among women..." I'm a white woman, but can't help but notice you only have one African-American woman on the show. If you've ever spent 5 minutes in D.C. you'll figure out that African-Americans are well represented. Couldn't you find another highly educated and successful woman?
I love the Real Housewives and I'm excited for a DC series having spent a decent amount of time in the beltway before.
However, Lets be real for a second. The NY Housewives and the Jersey Housewives are similar, DC and Atlanta, while distinct areas, are on the East Coast. Then there is the OC and the rumord (I'm not sure if its a 100% go) Beverly Hills edition. All of these editions are East or West coast themed!
How about a Real Housewives of Chicago... Austin/Dallas/or some other Texas City, what about Seattle, Las Vegas, Santa Fe, how about a London/Paris/Rome/International edition? Lets spice the series up Bravo! I know they are all different casts and have different drama but regionally speaking, NY NJ and DC are all part of the Northeastern Megalopolis that runs from Boston down to Richmond. Then there is Atlanta on the East coast and then two West coast editions that are stones throw away from each other. All I'm saying is, America is a big country, lets move around a bit!
LMAO when Grandma Wrinkles came on set. I thought Andy would pee his pants (but it is kind of a homely cat). Andy: why did you let Kelly contradict you 3 times that she was forced to go to St. Johns? This is the problem I have with Kelly. She actually believes her delusions. And Bethany is correct: you cannot rationalize with a delusional person. My only question is whether its mental or chemical (coke/meth/Prescription pills). Crazy people don't know they're crazy! Any chance Bravo could require all Housewife hava a physical (and full blood work/drug test) prior to filming each season? PS: I will be boycotting the Housewifes of DC due to your casting the Salami poser. And mark my words: something terrible could happen at the hands of Danielle (she's wacked out and obviously has a preoccupation with surrounding herself with Thugs/low lives). Since Kim G is still hanging with her (she want to get on the show so bad) I have absolutely no respect for her anymore either. Caroline is an excellent judge of character!
Last night's show was the best one by far! You three and the crew all cracking up. I laughed the whole time. I love your Mazel Mazel and Jackhole of the week segments. Where did you come up with Jackhole? Good Stuff!
last nights show was great..very funny...loved your face when Grandma Wrinkles was on your lap..priceless!!!
Andy, back to the RHONY - can you speak more on Kelly Bensimon's statement that "Bravo forced" her to go on Ramona's trip. She said "everybody" knows. I'd like to here what you have to say. How was she asked? What actually happened?
Andy You looked so handsome in your suit last night love OMG the 2nd part of the reunion awesome as expected but part 3 getting to crazy Kelly and her "breakthrough" BS or whatever is wrong with her? She continues w/the bullying but she was bullying them!!! and she doesn't even see it when its put on TV right in front of her!!!! Its just a little scary, where is her reality? I don't think she is real enough to be on a reality TV show, and It's not nice to mess with the unbalanced.
DC IDK they make me uncomfortable, to think they got in to that dinner, and I undersatnd your stance, but do you think they did it as a finale to the season? But they still got into that dinner and that changed things for me, BUT I will watch 1 show, just 4 u WWHL Grandma Wrinkles, I had to watch that again this morning, the look when Lexie brought the cat in to you and your face, priceless!! Oy and you petting her and a scab on her head too much you are killing me lmfao Last nights show could have easy been an hour long, I swear you have started a whole new hybrid talk show and all of us original watchers, will someday look back and remember you in the clubhouse drinking Makers Mark and remember "fun times"
Thanks for the entertainment xxoxoxoxoxox
Hi Andy: I read your defense of the decision to keep the gate-crashers on the DC show, but I cannot agree. While I understand your distinction between condoning and simply showing "real life", there has to be a line somewhere. Taking it to extremes, if one of the housewives committed a murder, would you not consider removing that participant from the show? I concede that crashing the White House is not in the same universe as murder, it is behavior that should not be modeled for others to copy. I watch every other RH franchise, but I won't be watching DC.
Andy, I absolutely love you! Please, please when you have Kathy on the show, ask her her take on the controversial housewives! Kathy is unbelievably funny and makes me laugh uncontrollably. You by the way are so talented sir! I have to say it was meant that you host this type show because you handle yourself with such decorum and sincerity that you can ask or say anything and people respond. Thanks for bringing joy into our home, cause we love ya! ps. don't know if this means anything but a realization that is baffling to me...but in all the years I have been working/playing/communicating on the computer..I have never blogged (and who came up with that term BLOG??) BUT I find it exciting to write to the housewives on a weekly basis. ps. never seeing my blog EVER, but I still write to them. I don't know why either..do I think I make a difference, do I wish it was me in the scene or predicament I'm blogging about? whatever the reason, I seem to enjoy it, so thanks again Andy. psss. Wouldn't it be interesting with the following ladies on your show: KELLY, JILL, BETHENNY, DANIELLE, DINA, and JAQUELYN AND LASTLY SONJA! Why Sonja, I'll tell you, there is so much more to her than meets the eye. She has got her sh_t together and I truly believe people, or shall I say woman can learn a lot from her! ESPECIALLY a few of the above guests. Gonna truly miss Dina though. what a shame due to a maniac on the loose! I know I'm rambling but I soon have to go do Mommy stuff so trying to get my scattered thoughts off to you. Well gotta go, looking forward to Thursday Night!
I love the housewives of NYC, but I just can't watch Kelly anymore. She makes me so angry because she causes drama, fights, and then turns it around like she is being bullied. Its getting too difficult to listen to her. I know she probably has helped with ratings and thats fine, I put up with her last season but I wont do it again. Will Bravo consider removing her from the show? PLEASE!
I love WWH!! I LOL when you were holding Grandma Wrinkles. Your expression was priceless. Ramona was a little quiet. I enjoy her more when she's doing turtle time. Get her a glass of pino! Dina I will miss from RHONJ. She is a classy gorgeous lady and I don't blame her for wanting Danielle out of her life. Looking forward to RHODC. It's true these other housewives don't talk much about politics. I was surprised that the Atlanta housewives did not show their reactions to the first African American President. Maybe Bravo was not filming at that time. It would have been interesting to see if they took part in the election process. Keep up the good work Andy!
A pussy named Grandma Wrinkles in Andy's lap... Where's Kathy Griffin when you need her?
Seriously, an excellent piece of writing for the HuffPo, Andy. All pun intended, Bravo!
Now if you could just give Kelly K.B. a lesson or two...
Kelly scares me!! She needs help. She makes no sense when trying to make a point and lets talk PHONEY!! She reminds me of a girl a I knew in high school. Always the center of attention and talkin smack about others. BRAVO...get some new material!!
First rule of successful TV: engage us in something outside the viewership experience. ALL THE CONFLICT, FIGHTING, ARGUING & TENSION we can get from our own families/friends. the high living, fancy parties & bling we can see in a rap video. Concept: Take a diverse group of privileged, educated women - place in various social situations - stir - film result. (TV) Reality: In spite of this wacky premise - real friendships R forged and tender moments ensue. Luann: “My divorce is final today.” Ramona: grasp Luann’s hand in both yours. This is television worth watching.
Real Housewives are best when they support each other as well as their brands. Alex taking maternity jeans to Skinny Girl Bethany. That’s nice. Two wedding showers in St.John. That’s nice. Dancing, sexy housewives @ CD release party. Yeah!
BravoTV makes a mistake when they misjudge the sophistication of their viewership. We know these women are greater, more compassionate than the sum of the segments you show us. The Singer’s re-commitment ceremony displays that - funny, honest, touching, real.
“We go Forward from here” should be BravoTV’s new tag line, and the Mantra for NY Real Housewives new season.
Andy, you are truly an awesome, entertaining host on WWHL as well as the reunion shows....LOVE YOU! I especially admire you for telling it like it is. Last night you stood up to Kelly's statement about the show made her go to Scarey Island even though she was opposed to it....didn't she joyfully skip to the yacht? So, I absolutely believe YOU Andy...and the other hosewives who said it was 10x worse. As far as the loss of Dina, that's a HUGE loss...she was fun and interesting to watch and I was glued when she was on. Danielle probably thinks she is the star now because she chased Dina off the show and she's getting sooooo much NEGATIVE airtime but who cares about her story?!?!?!? Her FAKE mob mentality is soooooo boring to me...I don't care about her and I don't watch her! Instead, I mute or change the channel when she is on because I love the rest of the show but sure would like to watch ALLLLLLLL of it without Danielle! Is there a possibility Bravo will extend WWHL to an hour Andy? I'm in!
Although I have been a faithful viewer of the Housewives of Atlanta, NJ,NY etc..., and a frequent Nielsen Ratings family, I have to say that I WILL NOT BE WATCHING The Housewives of DC. It is so disappointing to me because I, living only 30 mile from DC, was so looking forward to the series; however, I cannot support a show that will elevate the likes of the Salahis' to celebrity status after CRASHING a White House function. I always appreciated the lifestyles of these ladies and thought it genuine, but the Salahi are shameless and reckless fame seekers and I refuse to watch pathetic people such as that!! You cannot reward VERY bad behavior with celebrity. All you do is encourage the same. As far as I am concerned, the Salahis' are on the same level as the "balloon boy's" parents, so desperate to feel important and be in the lime light, they don't consider the horrible consequences of their behavior.
LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU! ANDY!!! You guys have something great going. Bravo (and you) will be around for a loooong time. Just a suggestion...consider dropping NJ Housewives and Alanta pleeeze....it's just a little too " Jerry Springer" and (sort of gross). But LOVE NY and OC. Can't wait for DC! Thank you or giving Bethenny a break! Love her too...
Alright so not that I don't love the "Housewives" series but come on, enough is enough. Although I think it would be great to have Austin or Huston big hair and all. Just a thought.
Andy--did we REALLY need to see Kim G's granny crack? And would you ask Danielle next week if she thought it was the least bit unusual that someone was texting while having sex with her.
I'm an African American women and I'm upset to see ONLY (1) AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN for The Real Housewife of DC? Washington, DC have alot of educated, professional black women in the area. I will boycott this show and ask my other black women friends to do the same.
I love the Housewives, it's my total guilty pleasure, but I just can't tune in to watch the Salahis in DC. I understand Andy's explanation but I can't participate in anything that will bring even more attention to this pair. Bravo - you've lost this viewer. I'll be back for the next round of Orange County...
Love the RHONY. Love the RHONJ. I was very excited to see our very own RHODC coming soon. I am now pondering boycotting because of the decision to keep Michael in the show.
I understand the reasoning Andy, but sitting down to watch a woman that chose to slap the nation in the face is a bit hard for me to stomach.
Best of luck.
Once again, Bravo delivered! The second installment of the RHNYC Reunion was riveting (not to mention disturbing, frustrating and comical). And "Watch What Happens" was equally entertaining, particularly Andy's obvious discomfort with Grandma Wrinkles (I share your feelings and can only say, "eewww!").
I can hardly wait for Kathy Griffin tonight. I love you BRAVO!!
I love all of the real housewives iam a total bravo tv junkie but i have to say the new D.C. show will not be on my television at any time. The Salahis deserve no more tv time than they have had. Anyone who has the audacity to 'crash' a white house anything is a disgrace to the country and i cant believe these z listers are now on a show. Let me guess the first taping was the night of the white house party?.... really BRAVO u don't need to go there.
Love ya Andy, but your posting is alot of bull. Its appalling that Bravo and the Salahi's remained silent after the incident, and even more so to learn from your post, that filming was already going on. By not saying anything at the time in the incident took place, you now have elevated their celebrity. And then you go and pawn it all off on those who "Choose" to be on tv and those that "Choose" to watch them. Yes, Bravo's hands are clean in the matter. HA!
Love Andy, Love the Housewives, But will not watch the DC Housewives. I was excited about the show, until I heard Michaele was featured. It is one thing to make a mockery of yourself as a real housewife- it is quite another to make a mockery of the White House. I am embarrassed for her and I hope she pulls a "Jill" and realizes her actions were shockingly inappropriate.
Andy, I love RHONY,and I love your show-so last night, after the reunion,I watched RHONJ because I knew you were on next. I do not get this show. You have these women who detest another woman(who quite frankly is trailer park trash)-why be on the show w/her? Can totally understand why Dina is leaving.Also,please,please,please-get rid of the moron,Kelly.
Andy, can you explain how comments are moderated on the cast member blogs (RH, specifically)? I looked around the site and haven't found the answer.
Would love to see audition tapes of the HWs, if that's what they had to do, or the stories of how they were all interconnected or ecommended.
Liked Jerry Seinfeld's comment about "faux fame".
I think Bravo has "jumped the shark" with all the HW shows. Too contrived and artificial, especially by the 2nd year. I'm losing interest fast, sorry to say.
How about a San Francisco Real Housewives, that would be awesome. The landscape is beautiful, and the amazing gays here could be the housewives besties! Bring housewives to the west coast.
Love u! Would you consider giving Dina and Sonja their own show? I think they would be incredible together away from the mean girls and the crazies
Andy you are a true kick in the pants! I love watching you and all the Real Housewives shows. I have to tell you though, for the first time. I am choosing NOT to watch Real Houswives DC. I think Bravo has made a poor choice by keeping Michaele on the show. I am disapointed that she is getting any sort of attention for "allegedly" crashing the Whitehouse dinner. I think most of America saw on the news her "alleged" entrance. I find her and her husband's behavior appalling, calus and disrespectful to the president as well as the rest of this country. Nobody deserves to be rewarded for such poor conduct
I was so disappointed that Dina left and Danielle stays. What a pity. Words cannot express my regret.
Andy, I love the Bravo Channel and enjoyed all the Housewives seasons, NJ being my favorite. But I have to say last nights show went to far. The Danielle drama is getting to be a little much. There are a lot of people (viewers) who are in the same frame of mind as Dina, positive. Dina shows class with leaving the show, it's been fun watching the Manzo family, very entertaining! I'd like to see less Danielle, and.....Kim G, are you kidding me? Manzo's, fun, positive!
Andy, since the real housewives show is so popular, have you thought about other cities for it? How about Portland, OR? I can star!! I am successful, funny, married and loves to flirt! I can send you a pic!
i would like to know if there will be another season of "the real housewives of atlanta?" if so, when?
Andy, Love your show when I can stay up late enough to watch it. But I think I'll pass when your guest is going to be Danielle or Kathy G. Not a fan of either, but that is just me. LOL!
I also will not be watching Housewives of DC. With the way the economy is now and all the political stuff going on......I for one, don't want to watch the rich on Capital Hill spending money like it was going out of style and having extravagant parties. Again , just me and my opinion.
And the party crashers need to go.
Hey Andy, Love the show, when will Jeff Lewis be back I need some male crazy in my life, I'm so done with the housewives drama I love them don't get me wrong but the double dose of NY and NJ is starting to feel more like an overdose. I need a Jeff, Jenny, Zolia and rumba fix LOL
I love all the different Housewives shows!! They are all so unique and full of real life girlfriend drama...can't wait to see the DC girls take the stage!
Andy you are such a 'jewel'! I love you dearly & would adopt you in a heartbeat, I'm a G'ma who enjoys all the shows on Bravo! I became a Bravo fan when the writers went on strike and the Network shows went off...thus, I channel surfed... found Bravo and been a loyal fan ev er si nce! I now watch only Bravo, 'E' and Oxygen and A&E sometimes.... no more Network shows for me. I've watched all the Housewives since the very beginning and love them all! my favs are still NYC and NJ, and your after shows! love it and love you dear Andy keep up the good work my dear I'll be tuned in!
ANDY, WHEN IS JEFF LEWIS RETURNING? LOVE THE NEW 'BETHANNY 'SHOW TOO..... REALLY LOVE 'DOUBLE EXPOSURE', SPICY, SASSY, NAUGHTY! CAN'T WAIT FOR DC HOUSEWIVES...... KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ANDY, YOU ARE SO FABULOUS!
I can't wait to watch the Real Housewives of Washington D.C. I know It's going to be great! lol. I am not a stalker, I'M ADDICTED! lmao. I love the blogs to. They provide that extra gossip. I look so forward to reading them after the shows have aired and I leave my comments each and every single week. It's all in good fun though. Love Ya Andy, Love Ya! lol
Andy (my name too!), I was happy to get your background perspective on the new D.C. show, and the Salahi White House crashing incident. While Saturday Night Live, the Bonnie Hunt Show and others had a lot of fun with it, I was horrified that someone without an invitation to a White House event could not only get in so easily, but get within touching distance of the President. Obviously this couple didn't have sinister intentions and did this because they were desperate to get themselves more airtime on the show. I can just imagine how the Bravo producers' jaws dropped when this breach hit the news the next day. I guess we'll see how this plays out. I think you're terrific, and I would love to see you adopt your own little Grandma Wrinkles, maybe Sister or Auntie Wrinkles!
