Worst Tonys Ever?

Andy Cohen gives his assessment of Broadway's biggest night.

Jun 14, 2010

Before I get to my ramble, don't forget that tonight at 9 p.m. EST it's Part 2 of the NYC Wives Reunion. At 10, the NJ Housewives are back with an episode that features the departure of one of the wives. And at 11, I am live with our first summer Monday Watch What Happens Live featuring Ramona from NYC and Dina from NJ.

It really is saying something to call last night's Tonys the worst ever. This about a show that seems to get worse every year, but man that was lame. Sean Hayes was hilarious and a great host; I am so happy for his recent success on Broadway. Beyond that I don't totally know what to say about the nine jukebox musicals that seemed to be competing with each other. I think because there was nothing new or original (besides Fela) this year, that 18-hour award show really suffered.

I was fairly miserable by the time Catherine Zeta Jones layed a big messy stinkbomb at Radio City in the form of "Send in the Clown,s, but when she then won for Best Actress in a Musical I was pretty sour. Then Memphis won best musical and closed the show with the crappiest song that my unborn fetus could have composed.

I dunno. But I did love Matthew Morrison and I at least admired Lea Michele's gumption to get up in front of everybody and do a terrible job attempting to be Barbra Streisand. I felt so uncomfortable for Beyonce and Jay-Z, but especially when Lea came over and serenaded them.

So that's my Tony report. Who cares! The weekend in the Hamptons was pretty overcast, which meant that I got a boatload of work done. I screened a mini marathon of The Rachel Zoe Project and Flipping Out episodes, as well as some other Summer by Bravo fare. I feel like I accomplished a lot. Oh, and there was a gorgeous benefit for the Hetrick-Martin Institute at Grey Gardens, the formerly overrun-by-cats home of the Beales. It was so cool being on those famous grounds.

I am on the shuttle to D.C., the land of Top Chef (premieres Wednesday!!!) and of Malia and Sasha. I will be back in time for a big TV Guide party and then the big show, so have no fear. Have a great day.

Oh, by the way — a big Mazel to Bethenny Frankel and the crew of Bethenny Getting Married on their spectacular series launch Thursday night. It was Bravo's highest-rated series debut ever! I love BGM? so much — it is funny, light, serious, real, and touching.  And here is the Watch What Happens Live After Show we recorded Thursday night....

In addition to being disappointed that someone close to me lost in a big category last night, I agree the show was a dog....except for adorable Sean.

I got my sweet husband into watching RHofNY with me now. When he watched CZJ "sing" last night with her eyes, he said she was "channeling Ramona". Isn't he a scream?

Have a great time in D.C.!

Yes! Catherine Zeta Jones was awful! I could not believe it when she won...and what a lame thank you to Michael Douglas. "He's a movie star, and I get to sleep with him every night!" Yuck. I liked Kristen Chenowith, too. Her fainting was hi-larious. You better get cracking on some sort of "Housewives" musical for next season. Sarah Jessica, and Ellen Barkin could star.

Agree about the Tony show. I always watched to the Tony awards to see what show I may want to go to Broadway and see. Thanks to the show, it looks like I will be saving money this year.

CZJ? Why? Love that show however to waste it on her singing in bed (without her old man) was really sad.

Looking forward to part 2 tonight. Have a great week.

Did Grey Garden's smell of cat? I read an article that Sally Quinn said on rainy days you can get a wiff! would love to do a dance down those stairs!

Love reading your blog as much as I do the housewives. Agree with your review of The Tonys. Gawd, Catherine Zeta-Jones is this generation's Kathleen Turner. Ugh. Thrilled that Bethenny's show is a hit!

Having to try to get work done because it was cloudy in the Hamptons only makes me envy you. I wonder how many times someone has asked to be your assistant for a day?

Ellen M...I said the same thing to my husband about the eyes! So funny...but I like Ramona way more than CZJ!

Saying it was the worst ever was the best part of the night watching. Perhaps Neil Patrick Harris should have been there hosting ? Sean Hayes was pretty good, but where have all the talented people gone ? Has Broadway lost -dare I say- it's gay ? Gay it up Broadway ! Maybe we need Kathy Griffin there ? Or maybe we just better playwrights ? Stories ? Either way, it was by far one of the worst in the last ten years. And that's not saying much of anything since the last ten shows were worse than the next.

Thanks for your review of the Tonys. I thought it was just me. I've only heard a lot of gushing about the performances...Lea Michele in particular. But I thought her performance was screamy and manic.

How can this awards be any worse than last years? at least there was no singers getting hit on the head (Bret Michaels), tributes to rock of ages, or annoying revivals (hair? really?). People did seem to be having an off night (both Matt and Lea sounded out of breath for some reason) but it a little more enjoyable than last years. If only NPH had hosted again!

I absolutely love Watch What Happens Live! It should be on five nights a week, with Ellen Barkin as your sidekick! Can I come and be in the studio audience?

Andy, spot on about the 2010 Tonys. CZJ, pitiful. After winning, now she'll delusionally think she can really sing. If he had the misfortune of witnessing it, I'm sure stephen sondheim's stomach soured. A travesty, indeed.

By the way, when is rhoa season 3 set to begin?

LOVE you Andy..you are fantastic and amazingggg..you were awesome with the ny housewifes..3 cheers to you..

Andy!!! You MUST have Kathy Griffin on your show. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear her thoughts on some of these women!!

Hi Andy, Although I think you do a terrific job at these reunions of being both provocative and sympathetic, but that isn't my main concern. I have never written in to a show in my entire life, but after watching Kelly accuse her castmates of systematic bullying, I couldn't help myself. I think that there is a huge problem in this country with the way girls can gang up on and bully other girls. For Kelly to describe their treatment of her as bullying is to obscure the real symptoms of bullying. The fact that Kelly could (presumably) watch her own behavior these season and fail to recognize the weight of the insults that she threw around is unsettling. There is actually a real epidemic of bullying, facilitated as it is by social networking sites and a lack of accountability. Kelly is no victim.

i think the female attorney who went to visit her client in jail & set the metal detector off because of her under wire bra who then proceeded to take it off in the bathroom & was still denied access to her client deserves mozel of the week for trying!!!

Loved your show with Bethany. Andy, why does Jill continue to blatantly show her anger towards Alex? Where do think is her 'changed' person who forgives, etc.? She treats Alex with such disdain. What has Alex done besides been a faithful friend to Bethany? hmmm? Does Jill 'hate' Alex for being the friend to Bethany that Jill has not been and still is not (in my opinion). Jill appears to want to return to her previous 'star' of the show.. and get her own show perhaps?

Andy,

You are sooo mean. I never thought I would see that from you on TV. Just beating up Jill, beating a dead horse, you have no feelings, you are horrible. I am no longer a fan an will not watch you and like you anymore. Ramona was horrible last year a real bitch and you weren't half as hard on her as you were on Jill, when she has had a rough year and already admitted her faults!! You get my WEENIE OF THE WEEK AWARD!!!! AND YOU CAN SHARE IT WITH ALEX

Andy, I'd love to see a montage of Ramona's eyes, starting with her yelling at LuAnn last year to STOP SAYING THAT I HAVE CRAZY EYES!!! I DO NOT HAVE CRAZY EYES!!! Of course, you'd need to end it with the catwalk clip, my fave.

New York

I feel that Jill should rise above the bullshit of Alex and Ramona! both of them make me sick talk about - hello "Pot calling kettle black" both of these ladies (I bite my tongue when I say ladies) are without class or integrity...shame on them (P.S. I really do not like Alex - she is in high school one of those bitchy eat a sandwich ugly girls who need to look in the mirror before she calls out others!) as for Ramona with friends like her who needs enemies - she attacks like a pit bull without warning... she needs to listen to what she says... she is no friend to Jill and the way she acts never has been

from what I see the jealous ones are Ramona and Alex!

as for Bethany ...WOW go after Jill really ...look in the mirror she treats the crap on the bottom of her shoe better than she treats people. and if she thinks Ramona and Alex are her friends she is wrong... watch the company you keep...

Oh, Andy,I don't even know where to start! You are right in saying that the Tonys were terrible. How can a show that is suppose to celebrate all that is best in a terrific art form ALWAYS be so slow, plodding, stiff and dumb? It almost defies logic.

But then again, logic seemed to be in short supply this weekend. 'Bethenny Getting Married' was Bravo's best? you have got to be kidding. Even the NYPost said it was boring. Most conversations are when the person only talks endlessly about themselves.

If this were any other network but Bravo I'd say the show would be cancelled pretty quickly. However, Bravo has shown that they keep most shows well past their prime and then spin-off a bad clone into an already saturated market. You should be ashamed but I suppose you are laughing at all of we original Bravo viewers all the way to the bank.

Andy, Apart from Master Weiner, 13 yr old #1 RH fan, I'm right next to him. I live for ALL of the housewives shows, Rachael Zoe, Flipping Out, 9 By Design, Millionaire M M, Bethany G M & of course, Watch what Happens Live. I have them all taped & have seen all, since their beginning seasons. HUGE fan!

I'm just wondering why you would want to taint your show, with the likes of Kelly Bensimon (the big hunk of gristle). You're threatening the reputations & integrity of all the other women, for the sake of having this crazy person on, for your entertainment. It's a diservice to a person with such mental problems, too. She certainly isn't bringing anything to your show & you may even risk losing some viewers. Best Regards, JoJo

Huge fan of Sean Hayes but was so disappointed when he had to bring in politics @ the beginning with the rep. closeted comment. Thanks BRAVO and Andy for the excellent television programming, keeps me happy!!!!!!!

Fela's music wasn't original for the show, good but not original. Memphis was the only original score in the category. I totally agree with Katherine Zeta, ugh! I would have liked to see a whole number of Promises, Promises. I think the musicals were just a bit sub-par this year and it was reflected in the show.

Yes...I agree about the Tonys too. Last year was so incredible (particularly because of Next to Normal) but this year was so flat and disappointing. I really wanted to be excited about the shows this season but I was anything but...and this years Tonys proved it. I mean after this opening number (which I didn't really enjoy), I knew it was going to be a long show this year. Hopefully next season and year will be better...no Tonys at Radio City though! Maybe it needs a smaller house...?

Andy-- OMG! The verkakte Tonys! I hated it! I watch them every year & this was THE. WORST! CZJ beat out Montego Glover? Are you F-ing kidding me? But I must admit seeing Jada Pinkett Smith wear too much bronzer(!)was a Twilight Zone sight that almost made the show worth it. Mazel to BF & you for "BGM?" She's hilariously sweet, tart & vulnerably adorable. I consistently laughed out loud the entire hour! Just when I thought I couldn't stomach another 1 of your RH crap shows, you trot out a real gem.

Agreed. Those were the worst Tonys I have EVER seen. Broadway has hit a low this year. Compared to last year (Love love love N2N, Billy Elliot, and Guys and Dolls), these just sucked.

On the bright side, great episode of Watch What Happens Live!
