Nice to have Jeanne back on the judging panel although I can't begrudge her taking leave for two episodes while she participated in the Frieze Art Fair where Salon 94 won best booth honors. Also, it was about time we had a female artist as a guest judge. Too many dudes...
A couple of things occurred to me looking at Abdi's drawing. I tried imagining if Mark had invested this much psychic energy into his vision of heaven what a different outcome we might have had for the opposites challenge. Abdi's piece had me thinking about Kehinde Wiley's work and also the Hudson River School where spectacular landscape paintings were made as a sort of tribute to God in nature.
Nicole's strange acorn egg echoed a similar sentiment with it's thinning coconut fur and lava bed blanket protecting the baby orb. I actually lobbied for Nicole's inclusion into the finale and it was a toss up in my mind between her and Peregrine for the final slot. Michele's comment about having the courage to make something small was spot on.
If I were in Jaclyn's position, I'd have used the bathtub self-portrait as part of the seascape were that indeed the direction she intended to go. What's that old saying about it's better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission? Looking back at the children's art challenge where the architecture of Jaclyn's tree sculpture was very much akin to this week's hanging rock installation and I'm surprised she presented something in the same vein after it failed the first time. I do believe her photograph captured the dull gaze of a Sugimoto oceanscape, but it didn't go far enough. All throughout the season her work generated a lot of controversy, which makes me see how much division still exists in a male-dominated art world. I'm so glad that she was part of this artist group. And it's pretty gutsy to title a piece "The End" this deep into the competition.
I am a big fan of Miles's work presented on the show, but part of his MO is to create pieces so complicated in their process that somehow they become beyond criticism, which of course they are not. He found a crumbly mushroom in the woods and marveled at the quiet wonders nature hides among its dead. Very cool.
I was very sorry to see Nicole go but it'll still be an interesting finale. I do enjoy Abdi, Miles, and Peregrine's work so I wasn't too upset with the outcome.
I'm not totally sold on Peregrine. As a person she is interesting and artsy, but her work I feel would not be able to stand on its own. Nicole was interesting..and had the skills to put on a one woman show I believe. Abdi is & has been my fav. I'm hoping he wins it all...his show...I'd see!!!
Peregrine? Nicole? Clearly Jaclyn had the best concepts and more consistently, the best executed pieces of those 3 women. Peregrine is all over the place without a shred of aesthetic sense. Creative yes. Rich background to feed creativity yes. But zero execution. Nicole for me was a close tie with Jaclyn but much less focussed and nowhere near as "professional" as Jaclyn. J's ideas were more conceptual vs Nicole's organic process and she consistently arrived at solutions that were both aesthetically and conceptually pleasing. Nicole's objects were always unfinished and poorly executed. If Jaclyn was in the finals with Miles and Abdi it would be an extremely strong finale. Not sure I'll bother watching now.
Peregrine's sketchy tree with "porn"aments hung from it...am not sure how she made the final cut.
Have not found Nicole's work very interesting but I actually sorta liked her little orb "nest".
Am GLAD ABDI's work won. WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
I've liked your critiques they whole way through this. You seem a lot more sensible. Stay inspired and keeps the arts alive as best as you can. We are the round pegs in the square holes.
Much happiness, http://www.davidehlen.com
I like the outcome of this episode. Abdi rocks. I buy anything of his - if I had that kind of money. Miles - I don't know why he included the wood and screw tool in the final art. Wasn't that his method? That's like displaying your paint tubes alongside a painting. I don't get it. I do like how his mind works though. I'm glad Jaclyn is gone. I'm tired of her self interested artwork. She only uses nude self portraits or assumes the world is looking at her and it just is boring to me. And expected. Snooze. Glad she's gone.
Jaclyn shouldn't have been eliminated! Her art was clean and appealing.
Peregrine's work looked like an eight year old kid's project, not art!!
i have commented on this weeks show on jeanne's blog but i neglected to mention peregrin's work. i enjoy her quirky take on the world around her and on her artwork. personally, while i saw the disconnect between the upper and lower portions of her piece but, to me, that's part of what made it work. contrary to what jerry said; yes, it was rather "messy" but that is how nature IS. that's kind of the point, don't you know? how clean does he think the forest is?
also, our relationship to mother nature is rather messy. we humans seem to be in constant conflict with ourselves as well as the natural world. we are, afterall, the top of the food chain; the most advanced animal in the eco system (although i have seen a lot of examples of humanity that don't seem all that "advanced" to me.) as we try to bend our environment to our will and our uses, we also want to enjoy the beauty and solitude of nature and conserve and mend it. sometimes there is nothing IN nature but mess. i saw all that and more in both peregrin's and nicole's pieces this week.
it's good to know that someone "got" nicole's piece and saddening that your lobbying for her did not prevail. i look forward to the finale.
The right people left. For once the judges not only voted on the merit of the work but on the potential of the remaining artists to show something spectacular in the future. I have a feeling that Peregrine has a difficult time creating something on demand. I can't wait to see what she will come up with when given time for reflection. At his age, Abdi has nothing but the future and I see the possibility in him for spectacular growth. As for Miles, he is talented, but his mind is like a closed book. Everything you are ever going to see from him is already inside it; he is not open and already thinks he knows it all.
On Abdi's piece all I could think about was Genesis 3:19
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
Abdi is the only artist in this show! I never really understood Miles' artwork. How can a tarred wall with his punchmark considered art. That wall can be placed on the street and everyone would see it as garbage! Miles is only good at explaining his art. Art should be self-explanatory anyway. Art is subjective.
I am glad Jacqueline did not use her bathtub photo, because it forced her to use something other than her body as a subject. I feel like using her body has been a "cheat"-using (her own) sex to sell. Abdi creates REAL art. He's great, and I appreciate that he includes his faith, yet in a quiet way.
i agree, i'm so glad you called miles out on falling back on the same "process" week after week (though he's been doing this all season so i wished he was challenged sooner), i think you did him a HUGE favor tonight b/c if he listens & pushes himself beyond the whole "comfort art" thing (which gets repetitive & one-note after a while)...it could really take him to another level. abdi's work blew me away tonight though - he's been a little inconsistent (felt like he got lost in the whole competition/seeking approval from the judges, that his vision/inspiration got blurred), but when he's focused, inspired, & true to himself - he's inpsirational! can't wait for next week!
Sorry to see Nicole go. I found her work interesting.
Abdi has been my favorite all along. Not only is his work interesting and engaging, so is he. I hope he wins.
I have to say that Abdi's piece floored me! I was so pulled into it that it became me. If that makes any sense. But it was beautiful and deserved to win. Not sold on Peregrine but I am anxious to see her finale. Miles, what can you say? His work is quietly screaming. But Abdi, is my favorite and I can't wait to see what his finale will be.
While I agree that Abdi's work was clearly the winner, I disagree with Peregrine's selection. I clearly felt Nicole and Jaclyn both had stronger works. I felt Jaclyn's work stood apart from the others- yet her explaination of her work seemed off...I found her work to be compelling as it exemplified her own ackwardness in Nature. The shackled "Rock" seemed like yet another self portrait in that it represented her own inability to see beyond self r find her place in the natural world. Peregrine's work could have definately improved via the use of opposing materials-as it stands it seems rather sophmoric and unrealized...almost like a window design for rubber boots
I agree with many above! Glad to hear Miles get some constructive critism. Bill had valid points. Miles work is cold to me, as his personality. Abdi is still my favorite, since Day 1. I'm still thinking Miles is going to overall win. I think Jacqueline needed to go, but I would have rather seen Peregrine go then Nicole, especially after last week. Not that I think Mark would have made it to the finale, but Peregrine didn't seem to fairly stay during that competition. Great week!!!!!
I think it was totally unfair to ask someone with OCD to stop being OC, you wouldn't walk up to a cancer victim and say " That cancer isn't working for me, stop having cancer"
The problem the world has with mental illness is not helped by people thinking its victims should just snap out of it.
I like Miles, even more so when people don't "get" him.
I like Peregrine too glad she's still around, What can I say I love quirky people.
I liked Jacklyn's piece last week ( most likely because it was Miles' idea.) She had finally grown on me,so I am half and half on her leaving, definitely glad Nicole was gone, she came off too "Art School" to me, if that makes any sense at all.
Yayyyyyy!!!!!!!!!! Nude Jaclyn is gone! Her nudeness week after week became very old and predictable. How is that professional? She just needs to join the porn industry, she is so hung up on herself. I did like Nicoles piece better than Peregrine and I feel she would have really wowed us in the finale, but Pere will come up with something nice. Not enough to win though. It will be a toss up between Miles and Abdi, of course.
Lot of haters on Peregrine. Trust me she is a great artist and has the work to prove it. I'm not saying I love everything she's done on the show, but nonetheless, she is super talented and very worthy of being in the finals.
Miles artwork didn't have anything to do with nature. For that very reason, he should have been sent home.
thrilled to see Abdi find his focus and voice again...... the first few shows I thought; this guy is going all the way and the found it painful to watch when he lost his way on several tasks. Good to see him back.
Jaclyn gone ....... no surprise, so self indulgent but isn't that what art is? Suspended rock in bondage...... really?
So very sorry to see Nicole gone....... think we will see her again, found her process very intriguing and wanted to see more. Must say she is the one I found myself wanting to watch each week.
Peregrine...... fantastic and look forward to her final show although this week left me pretty disappointed in execution and content. Thoughtful but could have gone so much farther, I wondered if her resume' got her to the final cut over Nicole.
Miles........ oh so contrived and just tiring to watch.
Abdi has an astonishing skill on which to base his intellectual, spiritual, and emotional concepts. Most of the others has exhibited little evidence of this. Ultimately art is still based in "artisan," "artifice" (in its original sense)and the craft/skill that those words imply. A cool idea or an emotional outpouring (often what the judges seem to want most)is simply not enough to qualify something as great art.

Watching Abdi go through his process of self-reflection and digging deep has been a high point in this series. He created an outstanding piece of work. I think it genuinely resonates.
Miles is back to the form vs. content debate. So much of his work is concerned with mastery of managing materials vs. pulling something deeper out of it. He needed to go beyond what he could (yes, here's that word again) manipulate safely and reach for something intimate. Evoking reaction is simple. It would be nice to see if he could pull out something so intimate that it speaks universally.
Jaclyn? She has a comfortable range judging by what was successful on the show and how it relates to her portfolio. Like she said, she'll keep making art. And we all know what it will look like.
I wish Nicole could have stayed. I thought her execution was more successful than Peregrine's tree. I thought the bottom half of Peregrine's sculpture was awesome. The top was a disaster. It will be interesting to see what she brings to the finale.
Previews show an "art school" reference by one of the judges (probably Saltz). I hope it isn't Abdi's work. I hope he goes all the way, but I predict Miles will do something evocative and even if I hate it, it will win.
Season 2? Hopefully, if the producers listened to the viewers and makes some adjustments. It's much more educational than the whiney boarding school bunch of pseudo family/fashion celebs.
Abdi has my vote for the best work this season with his nature piece airing 8.5.10
to me it spoke / depicted Abdi like Jesus (very powerful) surprised it wasn't mentioned. as if his was being resurrected instead of baptized
if there is another season i really want a chance to compete.
I'm a lost wax bronze artist among many other things.
my personal work and site creation is here:
thanks for your time, Bill i defiantly agree and relate best to your comments in crit. of any of the judges. (in my personal opinion)
thanks for putting together a great show. how can i be a part of it in any way???? other that leaving comments of course : >(
Miles' arrogance has irked me throughout the entire show however his wit and outrageous personality is very interesting to watch.
I think that his processes are the artwork - the final pieces are merely remnants. When you watch him create something it is the drama, the compulsions and the strange experiments that ends up being the most interesting. The final outcomes never represent all of the madness that occurred in the hours/days before.
I agree with abdi's piece being the best, was not my favorite in beginning but his work speaks for it's self. Does anyone know if there will be a season 2? How do you apply to be concedered? Http://723.com/danmbear Would love the oppertunity to compete with others in this awesome format! I wish all the artist a continued success!
Honestly, if you compare this show to other Bravo competitions shows Miles comes off as a saint. I don't understand people's issues with him. He's barely in his 20's and shows an immense ability for someone that age to question themselves, take criticism and help others regardless of the stakes of the competition. The other night didn't I just see someone hoarding salt on Top Chef to avoid helping others with the competition?
The very best thing the judges could do for Miles is to let him go. This guy is young, talented to a point, but he has been manipulating people all his life with his OCD (which I doubt). Should he be out this week this could be the lesson he so desparatly need to start behaving like a responsible adult. Then, only then, does he stand a chance to become a well known, succesfull artist. as the old saying goes: You can fool some people some time but you can not fool all the people all the time. I hope the judges will serve him this lesson for his own good.
i, generally, have nothing(extra) for critics...but you seem like a sensible-enough bloke! as for "work of art" ...it's probably like fishing in the gulf of mexico these days. yet, the whole charade has a few redeeming qualities!
it's a subtle, yet giant leap, to a means (or platform) of greater expressive purity-- the kind that sustains us in our lives. where like-minded folks sustain one another.
a means to support THE "expressiveness" of art indeed exists at this very moment as it never has in the history of the planet! GOOGLE IT!
Love this series. Please continue next season. This was really special. Just watching young people express their feelings through art was magic.

Glad you called Miles on his OCD. Funny how he and Abdi are still finding confidence to do their thing rather than what they think is the judges thing (Abdi) or the older/more experienced thing (Miles).
What we heard from the judges about Abdi last week and Miles this week was spot on - and probably the most valuable advice they could ever get.
Hope there is a season 2????
