Out of all the guest judges from Season 1 Richard Phillips was the lone artist brought back for another round, and tonight you saw why. The guy is soft-spoken and deadly lucid. My only wish was that he'd name checked his famous "painter-bation" term from his last appearance. (If you don't know what I'm referring to, you can Google it). Also, his celebrity portraits they flashed up on-screen during his introduction are now available as prints on my art website, Exhibition A.
I was glad to see Lola go she continued to stay way past her relevance to this show. But Dusty was a favorite of mine. However, I trust these judges to pick the best one and he might as well go now if he isn't the BEST ARTIST TO WIN IT.
Great show last night. Even watched it again this morning. I think this challenge was the best so far and really sparked he creativity in the artists. The judges made the right choices for the final three. (Wow, when did I start agreeing with you guys?) Looking forward to next week. Kymia, Sarah and Yung all earned this and I'm not sure I can pick a favorite.
You're wrong about Lola needing to continue to explore writing as part of her process. During the show, she wrote more and more and created imagery less and less. She's a writer and above all, a title-giver. That's all. Nothing that she created toward the last few challenges requires artistic talent. If what she creates is art, then EVERYONE with a digital camera and a pen with which to write words is an artist. Which means it's not even that special to be an "artist". Anyone can do it. Speaking of Young - he is also an "artist" who doesn't create art. He's an art talker. If he were not there to present and discuss his pieces, nobody would buy into him as an artist.
Bill, love your blogs , "tin foil snuggles" gave me chuckles. Although I am no artist of any kind, I really love watching Work of Art. It lets you into a world that lot of people have hard time grasping. I love glimpsing into how judges interpret and make decisions as to who the winners and losers are. And unlike Top Chef, you can actually experience everything at home. Together with the intensity the competition brings, it makes this surprisingly fun show. Thanks for entertaining blog to put icing on top.
I would agree that Lola's work was not good. I have not really enjoyed her "works of art". She has been entertaining but not as an artist. Her "original" format was a cop out and I wonder if she can even create a portrait.
I truly enjoyed Dusty's works through the show. I would have loved to see what he would have come up with had he gone to the finally. But, I am not sure who I would have removed for him to go. Too bad 4 couldn't go to the finally...
