Bill discusses why Young's work was so successful (and tells us the correct way to pronounce Kymia's name).

Michelle faced a near identical challenge depicting the Coca Cola can, her reasoning being that Coke Zero is different than the original painted by Warhol. But to me it's just Diet Coke men can feel manly about drinking. Her decision to paint the soda can on a phone screen was the most interesting to me. In the world we live in surrounded by so many invisible filters, perhaps the mediation is the message.

Let's face it, Andy Warhol *hee hee* is the face of Pop Art, since he is by far the best known of that style. And anyone who thinks he was not a complete and utter genius clearly doesn't know much about Andy Warhol. He was on the brink of mad maybe, but still...creative genius.

It is difficult for me to even think of ideas for a piece of Pop artwork that in some way isn't influenced by some of Andy Warhol's work. He was prolific!!! And his range of popular culture (aka marketed products) is astounding--I might have been tempted to do something with fashionable shoes or purses (one of his subjects) for instance.

I think MIchele's piece could have been successful if she had focused JUST on the cell phone. OMG, do you go anywhere and not see people attached to that little leash?? Talk about pop culture!

I'm not sure Dusty really knows much about Pop Art and frankly, felt the same about most of the artists work. I think they were reaching but falling sadly short. Kymia's piece was interesting to me mostly for her construction of it and trying to figure out what she used to pollute the water. Since she didn't actually take her own photograph, is "having the idea for the artwork" enough to merit her as the artist or isn't, technically, the photographer the artist. Is this a Dale Chihuly conundrum??

As for Young's win, he surely realizes that the fad in art right now is interaction with the viewers. This was a calculated move on his part, I feel, but hey, I'm learning a lot from him, even while I wince wondering how much of what he does is genuine (I do feel he had a genuine connection to Prop 8.) I thought Lola's comment about his artwork was pretty snarky and just shows how insecure she is about herself as an artist. Thanks for including Pop Art in the series. It's always been one of my favorites.

How does one audition for the show?

One could have hoped Pop would have been forgotten for the refuge of the non-creative that it was. Unfortunately, Warhol's 15-minutes of fame didn't end at 15 minutes and we're still stuck trying to take his work seriously even after all these years.

I think you need to read history--the mania we call "fame" today goes back at least as far as patrician women swooning over gladiators and collecting their sweat in the Ancient Roman Empire.

I feel like you and the other judges should give better feed back at the critiques and use better aesthetic language as well.
