So, you've paid your respects to the late, great David Bowie by visiting his New York City apartment and nearby studio (before it closed down), and even traveled to his birthplace of Brixton, London to snap a photo of the Aladdin Sane mural. So where now to walk in the footsteps of the much-loved Starman? Well, if you have a spare $40,000 to $70,000, you could do worse than jetting off to the Caribbean island of Mustique for a week and staying at Mandalay Estate, Bowie and Iman's former holiday home.
Built especially for Bowie in 1989, the property is set on 6.2 acres of lush grounds, and features an infinity pool, waterfalls, a split-level koi pond and garden decks — plus a team of 14 staff. All five bedrooms have private verandas that open out to the pool. Diehard fans will appreciate The Studio, a bamboo ceilinged, secluded pavilion where the man himself recorded music. The décor reflects Bowie's personal tastes, notably in its Balinese elements — Bowie loved the Indonesian island so much that he requested his ashes be scattered there.
“I wanted something as unlike the Caribbean as possible,” Bowie once said. “It’s a whim personified. I love a good cliché, and this house, for me, is just the most delightful cliché. What you have to realize is that Mustique is a fantasy island.”
Bowie and Iman are far from the only celebrities to be drawn to the tiny, private island, part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the West Indies. Kate Middleton and Prince William have spent numerous vacations there since 2008, including two babymoons. Mick Jagger is another regular and Kate Moss was said to have recently spent a week with her new beau Count Nikolai von Bismarck.
Mandalay Estate out of your budget and can't score an invite to any of the celebrity owned villas dotting the island? There are also a couple of hotels on Mustique. Rates at both the Firefly and Cotton House begin at under $900 a night.... merely pocket ch-ch-change in comparison.
