Millennials are the most bisexual generation ever.
A study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that the number of Gen Y who reported a same-sex experience doubled between the early 1990’s and 2014. In 1990, 3.1 percent of people asked if they'd ever had a same sex experience answered yes. Two years ago, the number who answered yes shot to 7.7 percent. The percentage of men who reported having sex with at least one man rose from 4.5 percent to 8.2 percent. Women who have had sexual encounters with other women rose from 3.6 percent to 8.7 percent.
Bisexuality has also become the norm with the help of celebrities who have been open about their sex and dating lives. Model Cara Delevingne has publicly stated, “my sexuality isn’t a phase, I am who I am,” while actress Michelle Rodriguez is also an out bisexual. Nick Jonas recently told Complex magazine he loves his gay fan base.
"As a heterosexual male, [I am] open and comfortable about loving my fan base, gay or straight, because to me there is no difference, it is my fan base. Your sexual preference does not matter to me and it shouldn’t matter to anybody. I thought [the criticism] was kind of dumb, considering I play this gay character on a gritty show [Kingdom]. There’s a gay sex scene. I kissed a man."
The study, which included 30,000 men and women in the U.S., also showed that acceptance of bisexuality had increased—among people of all ages.
Study author Professor Jean Twenge, of San Diego State University, said: “These large shifts in both attitudes and behavior occurred over just 25 years, suggesting rapid cultural change. These trends are another piece of evidence that American culture has become more individualistic and more focused on the self and on equality. Without the strict social rules common in the past, Americans now feel more free to have sexual experiences they desire.”
September 23 has even been declared Bisexuality Day in the U.S. Celebrate with your girlfriend. And your boyfriend.
