Our two-week long national waiting game is over. After an internet-wide nomination of names (some of which—ahem, Spotty McLongNeck—where rejected), and another week of voting by the public, Animal Adventure Park announced the name of April the Giraffe’s calf on Good Morning America this morning:
The name means “hope” in Swahili and the calf will be called “Taj” for short. The community had voted for “Alyssa’s Choice,” meaning that the calf’s keeper, Alyssa, got to name him.
The birth of April the giraffe’s calf was big news, to say the least. Nearly 1.2 million people livestreamed her labor, and when the baby—a boy—finally arrived happily and healthily, 1.2 million people breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Animal Adventure Park decided to use the calf’s popularity for good: They organized the naming competition to raise funds for giraffe conservation efforts in the wild and Ava’s Little Heroes, a campaign that supports local families with unexpected medical expenses.
