It takes guts to admit when you've made a massive cooking mistake in the kitchen. As in, so massive, it got you and your husband hospitalized. But if you know anything about Chrissy Teigen, you know she's got guts—and not just because she puts cheese in her guacamole. The model and Instagram food star managed to get her cookbook, Cravings, to the top of the New York Times bestseller list not by publishing timid little recipes that won't ruffle any feathers: One of her chapters is called "Sh** on Toast," and she's got recipes like "French Toast Casserole with Salted Frosted Flakes." But although her often eyebrow-raising recipes are actually delicious and have won her an even more enormous following, Teigen doesn't pretend to be an all-around badass in the kitchen. As she just revealed to Delish about her "one kitchen disaster that really sticks out," she recently screwed up so royally—and so did her husband John Legend—that they both ended up needing urgent medical care.
What happened? It all started with a mandoline, that innocent-slash-terrifying kitchen appliance that can cut vegetables into paper-thin slices. John Legend tried to slice up some spuds for a scalloped potatoes dish the couple planned to serve to friends at a football party, and he ended up chopping off the top of his finger, as Delish reports.
"I gave John the task, and within the first three swipes, he cut the tip of his finger clean off," Teigen says. "He refused medical attention because of whatever was happening at that point in the game, so I told him to go sit and let me 'show him how it's done.'"
Teigen grabbed the mandoline and.... did the same thing. "First swipe—first!—I sliced off the exact same finger tip. We have a great photo of us both at the urgent care center."
Did the incident scare Teigen off the dish altogether? Nah. As she tells Delish, now she just wears gloves when she's using a mandoline. But not just any gloves: finger-saving, industrial-strength Kevlar gloves.
