Comme des Garçons' Sample Sale is Part Supermarket, Part Candyland
Oh, and it's also an art gallery.
Comme des Garçons has teamed up with Dover Street Market to put on a sample sale that kicks off in New York today. And, like anything CDG does (ahem), this sale is anything but ordinary.
As WWD reports, the so-called "Super Market-Market" has a loose supermarket sweepstakes theme. But instead of cereal, shoppers will score steeply discounted designer merchandise from CDG and other brands, including buzzy Parisian label Jacquemus.
But this is where things get deliciously weird. Golden cupid statues will greet shoppers at the door. Throughout the space, art installations include monsters and a stack of shopping carts filled with Pharrell William's "Girl" perfume. Then, there are towering ice cream cones and supersize cupcakes, all part of the fantastical decor.
As WWD points out, the hyped-up shopping experience ties back into the "experiential retail," which basically makes shopping feel like an event. An event with gargantuan sweets, in this case.
