This $20 Brush Is the Best Thing That's Happened to My Hair (Maybe Ever)

It’s time to get rid of that brush you’ve had for ten years.

By Courtney Thompson

Confession: I’ve been using a grocery store hair brush for, well, all of my life. And I didn’t buy it from one of those gourmet, organic grocery stores. Nope, I’m talking about your basic suburban supermarket. While I’ve probably had three or four over the three plus decades—throwing them out only when the bristle nubs have fallen off and are scratching my scalp—they’re all of the plastic, under-$10 variety. And they’ve been fine, totally fine, until now.

Recently the Ultimate Tangle Teezer landed in my sample pile and I immediately recognized the brand name, as the pink original is the only brush my four-year-old daughter will allow near her head. Launched in 2000, Tangle Teezer is famous for its ability to glide through hair—even a tangled heap!—without pulling or snagging the scalp. Read: No tears or whining from my four-year-old.

But back to the Ultimate. This is Tangle Teezer’s latest innovation, and summed up, it’s perfect for the moms who have been using the original on their kids knotted mops. This version comes with a handle and longer bristles that can deftly brush thick, long hair without ripping or breaking your precious strands (even if there is some baby puke in there). Created specifically with styling dry hair in mind—think the perfect ponytail or even back brushing—I found the brush to work just as well with my wet tresses. And beyond being able to clean up my crazy, barely-slept-last-night bed head, the Ultimate also continues to leave my hair shiny and bouncy after each brush. How is that possible, you ask? Well thanks to a new configuration of the longer bristles, each stroke smooths your hair’s cuticles, thusly leaving me (and you!) with shinier results.

What else do I like? The price. And the pink color, obvi.
