When you’re young, one of the first things you learn is that it is rude to stick out your tongue. (Why, exactly, we don’t know. In Polynesian culture, sticking out the tongue is actually a symbol of strength, so thanks for nothing, Mom.)
Anyway, by western sociological standards, tongue taunting is frowned upon. So we’re honestly surprised that this cat with the regularly exposed tongue — @rexiecat — has 85K followers on Instagram. Who knew that people were into cats who challenge the social mores?
His mom, Dasha Minaeva, explained the phenomenon on Bored Panda. “It’s not like he sticks his tongue out and waits for me to take a picture. It’s more of a teamwork kind of thing. It’s important to catch the right moment on camera for the first, and do all the tongue movements possible for the latter. But the outcomes are never disappointing!”
Regardless of photography technique, the sweet Tabby has amassed a loyal following. And it may be due to more than simple tongue tricks (and the growing popularity of #tongueouttuesday); Rexie is also seen as an inspiration because he happens to be handicapped.
Although Rexie has all four limbs, only his front two legs properly function, and he depends on a set of pink hind-wheels to help him get around. But his disability is never the headline—it’s simply a secondary fact about a cat who loves to take silly photos.
“Disability does not mean inability,” Dasha writes on Rexie’s personal website. “I’m living my life to the fullest and happiest because even the outdoors can’t stop me from wheeling’n’walking.”
