Fall Fashion Head to Toe: The 10 Biggest Fall Fashion Trends
Say goodbye to summer with these hot looks for fall.
Our Fall Fashion Head-to-Toe series features all that's hot as the weather gets crisp. We'll fill you in on everything that's so of-the-moment for hair, beauty, fashion, and more. Stay tuned for all five installments of the season's must-read guide.
It's time to stow the sweet florals—Fall 2016 has no room for wallflowers. This season is all about bold, opulent styles that incorporate ruffles, sparkles, and decadent fabrics. Are you ready to jump in?
1. Metallics
If you love to leave a trail of glitter wherever you go, this is the season for you. “Super shiny metallics are back in a big way this fall," says Elizabeth Bernstein, Fashion Director of Handbags at Portero.com. And that's not just for accessories. At Tom Ford's see-now-buy-now NYFW show, celebs like Rita Ora grabbed headlines in figure-hugging gowns that lit up like sultry disco balls.
2. Off The Shoulder
The summer's hottest silhouette is sticking around this season—you may just have to toss on another layer. "Off-the-shoulder dresses are a great style for Fall 2016. Throw a cute sweater over one to create a whole different look while staying warm outside,” say Dan Hefter, founder of Picit, an iPhone fashion app.
3. Velvet
Velvet is a huge trend for Fall 2016—and not just in clothing. The luxe fabric is swathing everything from shoes to bags to jewelry. “Not only will we see velvet in designer gowns, but plenty of menswear will include the material as we head into the cooler days," says Fashion Week San Diego founder and director Allison Andrews.
4. Suits
Hillary Clinton isn't the only one digging pantsuits right about now. “This fall, expect to see slim and chic pants...in varying shades and colors, especially tan,” says Andrews. And indeed, J.Crew, Zimmermann, and Cristian Siriano all showcased pantsuits on the runways for their Fall 2016 collections.
5. Wide-Leg Pants
Skinny jeans, step aside. This season, wide-leg denim is taking center stage; jeans and other pants also have unfinished, heavily detailed hems.
6. Dark Florals
"The bold floral prints from spring and summer shall continue into fall with darker hues and a subtle sense of romance," says McMarden's creative designer John Lehman. For evidence, look no farther than Tory Burch's captivating fall collection.
7. Statement Fur
Fendi's epic Fall 2016 collection was one of many to feature big, bold statement furs. And though Rihanna's been rocking furry looks all summer—let's have a collective swoon over her heart-shaped Saint Laurent, above—we can't wait for the temps to drop so we can throw on a cozy coat. Listen, faux does the trick as well!
8. Ruffles
Designers like Jill Stuart and Cushnie et Ochs worked ruffles into their Fall 2016 collections. The girly frill can be casual or formal, depending on how your play it up. Bella Hadid displayed just how chic the styles can be—and gave us a peek at Spring 2017 trends—at Michael Kors' NYFW show.
9. Bomber Jackets
There's room to play around with this look, too. "You can play [the jacket] feminine or mean-girl style," says celebrity wardrobe stylist Ali Levine. Kendall Jenner is just one example of the several celebs rocking the look.
10. Menswear
This season, the girls are borrowing from the boys. "Plaid has traditionally had a masculine sensibility, but we've taken it out of that space with shapes that are feminine and powerful. I like playing with ideas some think of as masculine and redefining them for women," designer Maria Pinto told The Lookbook. Style star Olivia Palermo also incorporated menswear-inspired touches into her new capsule line with Chelsea 28.
