Do These 5 Deranged Food Mashups Deserve to Live or Die?

Welcome to Feast Week! Today, we're looking at the mashups that made 2016 such a deliciously weird year.

Love or hate them, mashups aren’t going anywhere. Because who can resist the urge to jam two (or three, four or five) favorite foods into one monster creation? Chefs, pastry wizards and Instagram mad-scientists sure can’t. Whether a mashup is mouthwatering, moronic or meh, a just-crazy-enough idea is bound to fire up both the yay-sayers and the haters. This year we saw upstarts from the Bourbon Bagel Burger to the Everything Donut to the Birthday Cake Croissant, and we indulged in some of our all-time favorites, like Graham Elliot's iconic lobster corn dog. Which mashups made you glad, or sad, or mad this year? Here, just five of this year’s dozens (hundreds? thousands?) of brave new mashups. Tell us below which one most deserves to live.

1. Bourbon Burger Bagel

We have no idea how you’re supposed to consume this thing, but we’re more than willing to give it a shot—make that a shot of bourbon in a glass that’s somehow stuffed right into a bagel bun.

2. Sushi Donut

Sushi doesn’t need donuts, and donuts don’t need sushi. Nonetheless, there you have it: the sushi donut. Is it pretty? Sure. Is it headed for the altar or for divorce court? You decide.

3. Birthday Cake Croissant

Cramming a kiddie-style birthday cake covered with sprinkles into a classic French croissant is going to make some people very angry. But however you feel about the concept on paper, you may never be able to put this thing down after you’ve had a bite.

4. Puffle Cone

Take a puffy Hong Kong-style egg waffle, stuff it with ice cream, then shower it with a slew of toppings and all kinds of candy. Why would you do that? Or are you thinking: Why wouldn’t you?

5. Everything Doughnut

Is this hybrid of an everything-bagel and a donut ruining both the bagel and the donut, or is it transforming them into a celestial savory-sweet pastry that’s way more than the sum of its parts? Only you can decide.
