These Next-Level Fried Chicken Sandwiches Are All We Want to Eat From Now On

Why wouldn't you want to try your fried chicken with pimento cheese, aioli, or prosciutto next time?

By Marcy de Luna

Summer is fried-chicken-sandwich season. Actually, every season is. But at the moment, incredible fried chicken sandwiches are rife across the land, and we're doing our best to spend our days eating all of them. Here, seven just to start with:

PB&J at Oddbird, Atlanta

At Oddbird, a monthly pop-up inside Atlanta’s West Egg cafe, the meat on the PB&J sandwich is dredged in a house blend of seasoned cornmeal and flour before it’s fried. But fear not, there's no peanut butter and jelly to muck up the flavors; instead the P comes in the form of pimento cheese (yum), the B is bacon (obviously), and the T is a gorgeously tangy-sweet tomato jam. Chicken Bao at Dak & Bop, Houston

Houston’s Dak & Bop nails Korean-style fried chicken, from its made-to-order wings and twice-fried drumsticks to the chicken bao: That would be Korean fried chicken breast, topped with a soy-garlic sauce and served on a soft-steamed Asian bun. The sandwich comes with Asian citrus slaw and pickles made in-house, but you'll want to pile on the freshly sliced jalapenos too. Photo by Kate Lesueur.

Chicken Schnitzel at Edi & the Wolf, New York City

Michelin-starred chef Eduard Frauneder at NYC's Edi & the Wolf does rustic Austrian food with a modern twist, and that's on briliant display in his amped-up chicken schnitzel sandwich. Chicken Milanese at Alimento, Los Angeles

Chef Zach Pollack, a 2015 semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation's "Rising Star Chef of the Year" award, focuses on re-imagined Northern Italian dishes at Alimento in Los Angeles, and that includes his must-try Chicken Milanese. The killer version of a fried chicken is topped with fresh puntarelle slaw along with silky prosciutto, and pepperoncini for a crunchy-juicy tang. Photo courtesy of Alimento.

Fried Chicken at CBD Provisions at The Joule, Dallas

The ultra-crispy fried chicken sandwich at CBD Provisions has an ingenious Tex-Mex twist, thanks to spicy mayo, avocado, shredded lettuce, and, yes, de rigueur refried beans. Photo courtesy of CBD Provisions.

Southern Fry at Plan Check Kitchen + Bar, Los Angeles

Celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, Pharrell Williams, Beyonce and Jay Z have all stopped in at L.A.'s Plan Check Kitchen + Bar for its unique take on comfort food, as in the indulgent Southern Fry: The sandwich combines smoky fried chicken with spicy green pimento cheese, housemade kombu pickles and duck breast ham for an OTT version you'll be thinking about for days. Gio Joe at Honey Butter Fried Chicken, Chicago

At Honey Butter Fried Chicken, the thing to order is the succulent, off-menu Gio Joe. Crunchy chicken tenders, pea shoots and garlic aioli are tossed in sweet chili sauce for an insane flavor explosion. Pair it with pimento mac ‘n cheese if you're brave. Photo by Christine Cikowski.
