First off, we just want to offer a #protip to readers: If you're not already following the TSA on Instagram, you should be — because many fascinating and stranger-than-fiction stories emerge there. For one thing, how else would we have known about the truly bats*** things people have tried to take through airport security recently?
Beyond that, the TSA's feed also just brought us this tragic photo of a gigantic, sad, miserable, homeless teddy bear, leaning forlornly into a trash can, abandoned at LAX. "Why does this gigantic teddy bear look so sad? He was abandoned by his owners at LAX after the airline and TSA determined that he was just too big to be screened as a carry-on and taken on the plane, TSA wrote in the caption.
But then, you guys. But then! The plot thickened. TSA later posted an update on the status of the bear and its erstwhile owner.
According to the update, here's what really happened: "After watching a YouTube video posted by the traveler, we’ve learned that he’s a popular YouTuber and this was a stunt to see if he could get the giant bear on the plane. He even made up a backstory that the bear was a gift for his girlfriend. The bear did not belong to a child. The passenger had actually bought a ticket for the bear. After the airline and TSA decided the bear was too large, the airline offered to refund the ticket and the traveler was given the option of checking the bear as checked baggage. The traveler opted not to check the bear and left it behind."
So, in the name of a stunt, some blogger abandoned this sweet, innocent bear in the huge, bustling, anonymous airport in America's second-largest city.
And we're back to crying. Ever heard of checking luggage?
Not OK. So not OK. (Sniff.)
