Ina Garten Reveals Her Secret Ingredient for Foolproof Guacamole (No Browning!)
You're probably not using it.
So Ina Garten can pretty much do no wrong (except for the occasional scandal, oops). Best-selling cookbooks, super-popular TV shows, hostess extraordinaire. And that extends to her guacamole recipe, of course.
Everyone claims to have the absolute best guac recipe, but there's always one issue—that lovely green dip inevitably starts to turn a yucky brown mere hours after it's made. There's all kinds of old wives' tales about how to remedy that—leave the avocado pit in the dip, cover it tightly with plastic wrap—but Garten seems to have discovered the secret to keeping your guac an appetizing bright green.
She shared her tip on Instagram. The secret? "Lot of freshly squeezed lemon juice," she revealed. You probably put plenty of lime juice in your guacamole, but lemon juice? Likely not.
"And I always buy the avocados a few days in advance so they're perfectly ripe when I'm ready to use them," she added in her post. Another worthy tip, because you never know when you go the store how ripe the avocados will be.
Her simple recipe includes red onion, tomato, garlic, Tabasco, lemon juice, salt and pepper, and avocados, of course. Easy, right?
Of course, everyone has their own recipe for the perfect guacamole. Not to disagree with Garten, but we've always been partial to minced jalapeño instead of Tabasco, and of course plenty of lime juice…but we're willing to give her lemon juice trick a try.
