It seems like every other month, there’s yet another zoo with yet another cute baby animal and yet another marketer with the same very, very bad idea: Let the internet name the newborn.
An unbelievably cute Asian small-clawed otter was born at the Kansas City Zoo on August 27th. He has quietly been hanging out with his mom, Cai, and his dad, Ian, but he will soon make his debut in the habitat.
So in the interim, Kansas City Zoo has opened up a naming contest for the cute little fella. Anybody can submit a name on the Kansas City Zoo website through today (October 20th) and then after they’re reviewed by the zoo staff, the top four names will be announced on the zoo’s Facebook page. Then, the public will vote and the name will be announced on November 10th.
As should be expected, the public has flooded Kansas City Zoo’s social feeds with ridiculous suggestions—typically in the style of [Animal Trait]-y Mc[Animal Trait]—because that is simply what happens when you ask the internet to name an animal. Here are some of our favorites:
You have less than 24 hours to submit your own suggestion before the baby otter inevitably winds up being named something completely ridiculous. So please, speak now and save this otter from a fate of Fishy McWetFur.
