Modern Family star Ariel Winter took to Twitter to slam an interview her mother Crystal Workman gave to Inside Edition. Crystal had told the news show that Ariel has been lying about their abusive relationship, and then revealed that she wanted to reconnect. Ariel was legally emancipated from her parents in 2015 at the age of 17. In her Twitter response, Ariel wrote: “If someone loves and cares about you, they tell you to your face and are right beside you, not on television telling everyone else.”
Ariel isn’t the only star whose relationship with Mom is less than rosy. Check out these other actresses who aren’t stocking up on cards for Mother’s Day.
The Friends alum didn’t have a great time with her mom, late former model Nancy Dow. Jennifer has admitted that she suffered from years of low self-esteem after her mom’s emotional abuse, and was even more hurt when her mom published a tell-all book about Jennifer’s life in 1999, at the height of her sitcom fame. The two barely spoke for years - she didn't attend Jennifer's wedding to Justin Theroux - and mom and daughter reconnected only a few weeks before Nancy’s death in 2016. Reportedly, Nancy left one last dig to her daughter by cutting Jennifer out of her will.
Drew's mother Jaid may not have been the best role model for her impressionable child. At the age of nine, Jaid took Drew to the infamous club Studio 54, where the young actress was introduced to drugs. A full-blown addict by 14, Drew filed for emancipation from her parents the next year. She has been estranged from her mother most of her life. In a 2014 interview, Drew said, “we can’t really be in each other's lives at this point." In the last few years, Drew, now a mom herself, has had a change of heart. She and Jaid reunited earlier this year for Mother’s Day.
Meg Ryan and her mother Susan Jordan repeatedly clashed over the men in Meg’s life. Meg uninvited her mom to her and Dennis Quaid wedding in 1991 after her mother accused him of having a drug problem. When the marriage ended a decade later, after Meg had an affair with Russell Crowe, her mother scolded her publicly. Susan chastized Meg in her 2001 autobiography The Immune Spirit calling Meg “a cold-hearted, cruel manipulator.” Of course, many say Meg and Susan’s problems began when Mom walked out on Meg’s father while the actress was just a child.
Kendra and her mom Patti had a great bond on the former Playmate’s series The Girls Next Door. Things turned ugly as Patti accused her daughter of putting her reality career before their family connection in 2014. As Kendra pulled further away, mom Patti posted her disdain over their relationship on social media – and Kendra accused her of sharing their family secrets with the tabloids. In 2017 two turned to Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars — Family Edition to try to mend their rocky relationship. But mom hasn’t seemed to learn her lesson with talk of Patti’s tell-all book causing strain between the pair again.
Leighton's relationship with her mother Constance was troubled from day one. Her mother was remanded on drug smuggling charges when she gave birth to the actress. Back in 2012 Leighton sued her mother for using money Leighton had sent for brother's medical bills to get Botox, plastic surgery, and hair extensions. Leighton sued for custody of her brother, who is eight years younger, and has kept her distance from her mom.
There was one guest missing from Vanessa’s 2011 wedding to fellow Dancing with the Stars contestant Nick Lachey – her mom Helen. Back when Vanessa was just nine years old, her mother dropped her off with her father - and never picked her up. The two have been estranged for decades.
Bethenny doesn’t mince words when it comes to sharing how she feels about her mom Bernadette Birk – the Real Housewives’ star has said that she “hates” her. A feud that’s endured for nearly 20 years – Bethenny talked candidly about her mother’s excessive drinking in the 2011 book A Place of Yes - the two seemed to be on the path of reconciliation in 2016, but that was short-lived. Just this summer, Bernadette called her daughter "a moron and a liar" in a magazine interview. Luckily, Bethenny has a much better relationship with her own daughter.
Famed actress Joan Crawford still takes home the award for “worst mom ever,” as revealed by her adopted daughter Christina, who wrote the bestseller tell-all, Mommie Dearest. In it, Christina describes the mental and physical abuse she endured at the hands of her alcoholic mom. Even decades after Joan’s death in 1977, Christina still harbors ill feelings for her iconic mom, saying back in 2008, “I think she took absolutely no responsibility for changing her behavior. Forgiveness is a two-person process.”
