Are Matte Black Kitchens the Next Big Thing?

Are Matte Black Kitchens the Next Big Thing?

Is it possible that this is even cleaner and sleeker than the all-white kitchen trend?

By Courtney Thompson

If you have a pulse and access to HGTV or, um, a grocery checkout lane stocked with home magazines, then you’re aware that the all-white kitchen is HUGE right now. It’s not having a moment, it’s having a decade. And with good reason—crisp and clean, super-white kitchens are also super-calming and bring a sense of zen to the center of the home.

While house hunting a few years ago I’d walk into a home and immediately make a bee line for the kitchen. Was it white? Were the appliances stainless steel? Is my porcelain apron sink in there? Like hundreds of thousands of others searching for a home (or renovating one), I was obsessed with having a white kitchen of my own. (Countertops? Quartz in Minuet, please. Backsplash? Subway tile in a herringbone pattern, duh. Grout? A sophisticated light grey, obvi.)

Here’s the thing about design trends though—they become dated real fast. Also, during that house hunting adventure I realized that every decade had certain design and architectural elements attached to it. A giant whirlpool Jacuzzi in the master bath and pink carpets? So ‘80s. Lightly-stained pine floors and track lighting? So ‘90s.

While it’s hard to imagine that our universally beloved all-white-everywhere kitchens might ever go out of style, certainly in twenty years a woman is going to walk into my home, take one look at my kitchen and mutter to herself, “So 20Teens!”

Which is why—difficult is it may be—we need to open ourselves to kitchen décor trends coming down the pike that are equally crisp, clean and calming. Enter: Matte black! Appliance makers have recently stormed the market with as slew of products—from sinks and refrigerators to mixers and espresso machines—in a sleek matte black hue, while decorators are suddenly championing black paint, black panes on windows and even black stone countertops. To introduce you to the idea, we’ve rounded 12 beautiful appliances and kitchen items that will help you see the light…the dark matte black light, that is. Baby steps, people!
