Jet-setting celebs spend a large chunk of their time in hotels. So it's perhaps not surprising that some of them start to treat them a little too much like home — if, as in the following examples, home is where you trash the place and act totally outrageous. Congrats to these celebs, current and vintage, and welcome to the celebrity hotel guest Hall of Shame!
1. Keith Moon
The whole hotel-trashing celebrity template can probably be traced back to The Who's drummer, Keith Moon. In 1967, in the unglamorous surroundings of a Holiday Inn in the also unglamorous Flint, Michigan, an icon of rock debauchery was made. Moon celebrated turning 21 by dynamiting toilets, launching a food fight, losing a tooth and, most famously, stripping naked and driving a Cadillac into the hotel pool. Basically, the whole thing foreshadowed The Hangover — not to mention lots of wild celeb hotel behavior in the intervening decades.
2. Led Zepellin
Led Zepellin wrought a trail of destruction through several of the hotels unlucky enough to host them in their 1970s heyday. They rode motorcycles through the corridors of the Chateau Marmont, and of the Continental Hyatt House, also in Los Angeles, where they also threw TVs out of windows. The most famous Led Zepellin hotel story took place in Seattle's Edgewater Hotel and involving a naked woman and dead sea creatures but the hotel has, according to Travel + Leisure allowed Robert Plant, at least, back.
3. Charlie Sheen
"Drugged up and naked" was how the New York Post described the state of Charlie Sheen as he trashed his room at New York City's Plaza Hotel. Furniture, mirrors, and a TV all reportedly bit the dust as he flew into a rage over a missing wallet and cell phone. His behavior terrified his female companion — who was forced to hide in the closet — and caused upwards of $7,000 in damages. Sheen even reportedly founded himself blackballed by the Waldorf-Astoria and Trump SoHo in response. Difficult to know how he feels about this, given that he's gone from dissing Trump to supporting him, then back to dissing him again.
4. Lindsay Lohan
In 2012 LiLo was kicked out of, and banned from, the Chateau Marmont (which has really borne the brunt of terrible celebrity hotel guests) for running up $46,350.04 in unpaid bills. It wasn't her first transgression, having been blacklisted from Santa Monica's Shutters on the Beach in 2007 for trashing her room. She clearly did not learn her lesson as, just six months after the Chateau Marmont incident, she was banned from the W New York for trashing her room there. "Her suite had so many cigarette burns, they had to change all the carpets," a source told US Weekly. "She did at least $50,000 worth of damage while partying. She is not allowed back at any W hotel in NYC, ever!"
5. Courtney Love
Courtney Love certainly lived up to her hard-living reputation at New York City's The Inn on Irving Place. In 2009, over the short period of an eight-hour-long stay, she "completely ruined her accommodations," according to a source at the New York Post, who nevertheless took a fairly relaxed attitude to the destruction. "She caused so much damage in eight hours and wreaked so much havoc. It was actually kind of funny... minus the $5,000 in repairs," they said, adding that she also left used feminine hygiene products and dirty needles behind.
Love's late-husband Kurt Cobain's band may have come across as sensitive types but they were far from immune to the tropes of rock star behavior. In 1993, at the height of mainstream success, the band were interviewed by MTV's Kurt Loder in Saint Paul, Minnesota — the feminist band members had first insisted that MTV also give air time to their all-female opening act Shonen Knife. Afterward, according to a 2011 interview with Loder, Kurt Cobain retired to his room while Loder went upstairs with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, “and they just got really, really drunk... And at one point, Krist just took this picture off the wall and just broke it against the wall, and then they started destroying everything in this room." After trying to sneak away as security closed in, Loder let them into his own room where the two band members continued smashing things. "I was saying, 'Please don't destroy the television set in my room.' ... They were just out of their minds; it was fabulous in a way and yet wrong... Don't do that at home. And the bill the next day was, like, $19,000."
7. Barbra Streisand
Stories of celebrities trashing hotel rooms are perhaps infinite, but stars can be annoying hotel guests in other ways too. London's Evening Standard reported in 2007 that Barbra Streisand once demanded that staff at The Dorchester in London not talk to her unless specifically requested; asked hotel workers at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to enter and leave her room backwards, because, she reasoned, "I'm simple, complex, generous, selfish, unattractive, beautiful and driven;" and requested "peach-coloured toilet roll to match her complexion and rose petals in the toilet bowl" at The Castletown House, Ireland.
