One dad learned just how expensive kids are when just hours after his newborn’s birth, he was asked to cough up $39.95 by the hospital just to hold him.
The father took to Reddit to ask about the charge, writing, “I had to pay $39.95 to hold my baby after he was born.”
The itemized bill that came to $13,000, but in the bill there it was, listed under a charge for “skin to skin after C-section.”
“The nurse let me hold the baby on my wife’s neck/chest,” he wrote. “Even borrowed my camera to take a few pictures for us. Everyone involved in the process was great, and we had a positive experience. We just got a chuckle out of seeing that on the bill.”
The post is getting a rise out of commenters, who were furious he was asked to pay up for snuggling his baby.
“Europeans will have a blast,” wrote one commenter, who referenced the free healthcare system available in many countries outside of the U.S.
Another wrote, “Canadian here. I've never even seen a medical bill! I had no idea it cost $13G to deliver a baby.”
“Cheap!? My partner had a c-sec seven months ago and it coat me a couple of sandwiches and a few bottles of pop each day to eat. Cheap doesn't even come close. It saddens me to know people have to pay to have children ridiculous!” wrote another.
One commenter form the U.S. added, “I asked for an itemized bill after my son was born. They immediately offered to reduce the price 40%. Proudest moment of my life was the birth of my son. The second was when I countered at 60% and she accepted.”
