New Mom Holds Impromptu Hospital Wedding 5 Hours After Giving Birth

Quick turnaround for these two.

Jael Pulcipher’s dream wedding dress was scrubs??!

On July 29, Michigan based Jael gave birth to daughter Briar six weeks early, then just five hours later decided to hold an impromptu hospital ceremony with her husband, John, who managed to bring a dress.

The two had been planning for a beautiful lakeside wedding in Michigan, to be held this summer, before Jael’s September 16 due date. But on July 25, she found herself heading to the maternity ward at Munson Medical Center after her water broke early. She went into labor soon after.

As Jael got (minimal) rest, John gathered family and close friends at a nearby bar, and explained they were about to have their reception in the hospital’s conference room—like now. Both the baby (four-pounds and five-ounces) and the wedding happened in less than 12 hours, and baby even made an appearance at the event.

“I told her if you can't come to the wedding then I’m going to bring the wedding to you,” said John. “So that's what we did here, but it took everybody. This isn't anything that I could do by myself.”

The couple’s lake Charlevoix ceremony was cancelled. They aren’t planning on rescheduling it either.

“There is no plan for a wedding,” John tells Up North Live. “One of the first parenting lessons that we learned today was that we had a giant schedule and itinerary. But, once you have a kid you throw all plans out the window. I think that this wedding shows that we are a real strong couple. We can't wait to live out the rest of our lives together.”

The Knot still has all the original wedding details and pictures up, describing it as an “Intimate lakeside Wedding Ceremony, Cocktail Hour and Dinner Reception to take place on Lake Charlevoix at John's Aunt & Uncle's house.”

“John and Jael first met at Bertha Vos Elementary School in Acme, MI back in 1993,” Jael writes. “However, the first time we spoke to each other was at a mutual friend's house in January 2015. Both of us left that night wanting to know more about each other. Our next opportunity would come in March—our first date! We went out to Leelanau county to view the ice caves on Lake Michigan, and it was instantly clear how comfortable we were around each other. Our first real test came in April 2015, when Jael spent a month in Costa Rica for an internship. As they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder. Once reunited, we became inseparable. That first year took us to a lot of weddings together, seeming to hint at what the future had in store for us. Weddings took us everywhere from Traverse City, MI to Philadelphia, PA, giving us ample opportunity to grow closer along the way.”

John had proposed with a drone ring drop in a Michigan cherry orchard.

Baby will stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for nearly a month until she is strong enough to come home.
