In the Face of Hurricane Harvey, Inspirational Dog Family Does Inspirational Things

And inspires us all in the process.

As the devastation of Hurricane Harvey unfolds, it’s hard not to think of all the people and their animals affected. But in all the distressing news updates from Texas, there are many stories hope and helping, and one of such comes to us courtesy of a favorite Instagram account, @NubbyDogRules.

In the past, we’ve turned to the Nubby’s Instagram for inspiration. Born with underdeveloped front legs and not expected to survive the night, Nubby shocked vets by growing from a sickly, wee pup into a happy 8-month-old dog who loves to play and explore his world. It is both a powerful message of the triumph of spirit and the will to survive. And also, Nubby is very cute.

One of the things that made Nubby’s story so inspirational is his owner, Lou Robinson. Lou accepted the call to rescue the pup at just 6 hours old, giving Nubby a chance to have a normal life and a platform to help spread the message that it’s okay to be different. Lou is also the founder of the animal rescue group Warriors Educate About Rescue, which takes in foster pets and also educates and raises awareness about fostering and spaying/neutering pets.

Located outside of Conroe, Texas, the family and rescue are close to the epicenter of Hurricane Harvey, but luckily they're not directly in harm’s way. They have been updating fans of Nubby on their own flooding and that of the surrounding area. They have also been accepting animal refugees whose owners cannot take them to shelters. Some of the animals they’ve taken in so far include an adorable tiny puppy found at the start of the storm that they named Windy Rain, a one-eyed Chihuahua, and a gold macaw parrot. The extra animals seem to be getting along well with Nubby and their four other dogs.

In addition to taking in animals, the family is also helping people by using their boat to aid the local fire department to save people trapped by the flooding. And they're also using their rescue platform to collect donation money, food and supplies for people and for animals effected by the storm.

It's impressive and inspirational that even when faced with a natural disaster, this family continues to give back to the community. If you'd like to aid victims of the flood you can donate to the Red Cross online or by texting HARVEY to 90999, donate to the Texas SPCA or to Lou’s charity below.
