BYE! We're Moving to Puppy Island

It's just a tropical island full of puppies, NBD.

In Turks and Caicos, there is a very special little island. Some proper people out there might call it Providenciales. But us normies are calling it Puppy Island. Why? Because it’s an island. Full of puppies. To play with. And then adopt.

Providenciales (there we go, getting all fancy again) is home to a dog rescue called Potcake Place. Founded by Jane Parker-Rauw in 1997, the charity’s stated mission is to “reduce the number of homeless potcakes on the island.” (“Potcake” is term for the island’s local breed of dog, which they describe as “extremely smart, loyal, and loving.”)

Starting in 2010, Parker-Rauw came up with a brilliant guerilla marketing strategy: Invite locals and tourists to play with the pups so that they could become socialized andsocial-media-ized.

Puppy Island volunteers are given water, toys, treats, and a leash so they can get some serious TLC with their vitamin C. (And don't worry about safety issues: All of the potcakes are both vaccinated and dewormed.)

In the seven years since the social program's launch, Puppy Island has grown massively in popularity. In fact, nowadays you might end up waiting over two hours to play with a pooch during peak tourist season. But the good news is that it has also seen an increased number of adoptions, with Puppy Island residents finding their way to fur-ever homes in the U.S., Canada, and abroad.
