When you work in media, you wind up combing through a lot of paparazzi photos of famous folks. They’re usually the same thing over and over—so and so furniture shopping, so and so drinking coffee at a sidewalk café, so and so picking up flowers from Whole Foods. (Seriously, why are celebrities always buying flowers at Whole Foods?)
Anyway, all paparazzi photos of Ryan Gosling showed him hanging out with his dog, George. The two were nearly inseparable—going for long walks, or taking hikes through the hills, or buying flowers at Whole Foods, probably. So fans and media-combers alike took notice when George became suddenly absent from Ryan’s side.
While many assumed that George had passed, Ryan never commented on it—until now. First, he wore George’s dog tag as a necklace during his appearance on Saturday Night Live last weekend. And then, in an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ryan confirmed the very sad news: his beloved best friend passed away last December at the old age of 17.
George traveled with Ryan all over the world, and was a staple on nearly every Gosling movie set. Calling him “a good friend,” Ryan explained to Ellen why he had a hard time calling George a dog: “It’s funny to say ‘dog’ because I feel like there was something about George where he felt like being a dog was beneath him. He would not do tricks. If you wanted him to even sit down, you had to kind of convince him it was in his best interest.”
While it is always hard to lose a pet, Ryan was able to able to speak fondly and humorously of his dearly departed friend. “He looked like an aging rockstar,” Ryan remarked of his elderly pup. “He was sort of skinny-fat, had big hair and no teeth, open sores—but still sexy. Still sexy.”
RIP George, and our condolences to Ryan!
