“Senior Prom” for Senior Dogs Probably Had Way Less K-Ci & JoJo, But Way More Adoption

And all my life I've prayed for someone like you...

You remember your senior prom: Obsessing for months over which gown to buy, reeling with anticipation of what will be the most magical night of your life, and ultimately being terribly disappointed by just how non-magical it is to dance to K-Ci & JoJo in a hotel event room B. (Sorry, did we say K-Ci & JoJo? We meant One Direction. WE ARE YOUNG AND COOL.)

Well, The Dog House of Safety Harbor’s senior prom was perhaps the only senior prom that actually lived up to expectations. The event—an adoption rally for senior dogs—featured 13 animal rescues and over 40 older dogs, all of whom were all dressed in their finest dELiA’s, ready to make an impression on promgoers who could become their forever home.

“Seniors are rarely brought to such events and certainly have much less chance of getting adopted,” Kelli Chickos of The Dog House of Safety Harbor told This Dog’s Life. “We wanted to have an event that not only included senior adoptables, but put the spotlight on them!”

And, like all good proms, the Senior Prom crowned a king and queen: An 8-year-old Chihuahua named Tye from Canine Estates, and a 10-year-old Pibble mix named Nina from Ruff Beginnings.

All in all, the event was a huge success, resulting in adoptions, interest, and awareness. “They ask for so little. They get overlooked, passed by for the younger, ‘healthier,’ more energetic [dogs],” said Chickos. “But heaven knows, they still have a lot more love to give.”
