Sometimes, it’s the promise of a burger, fries, and a beer at happy hour that helps us get through a rough day. We’ve always known these fatty comfort foods can make a mess of our health. But a new study says that might not be the case, as long as we’re balancing out those bad choices with a heaping helping of fish.
A study conducted by Liverpool John Moores University and published in the Experimental Physiology journal found that eating fatty fish such as sardines, mackerel, and salmon twice a week could help reverse the damage being done to our body by our junk food-heavy diet.
As part of the study, obese mice were fed a high-fat diet and given the same omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like salmon. After a few weeks, the mice had fewer health issues commonly associated with obesity, which has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
So does this mean that eating mackerel for dinner can cancel out the greasy tacos you scarfed down at lunch?
Nutrition experts remain dubious that there's a cause and effect relationship. Two servings of fish per week certainly increases the benefits of the immune system and metabolism, but it's not a magic bullet and won't erase regular junk food consumption, said Dr. Philip Goglia, founder of G-Plans.
“That’s a bit like saying that because broccoli has anti-cancer benefits that it will reduce the risk of lung cancer as you continue to smoke two packs of cigarettes daily,” Goglia told The Feast.
Rebecca Lewis, registered dietitian at HelloFresh, agrees that there's no magic cure for an unhealthy diet. “If you are already overweight, diabetic, or suffering from any form of cardiovascular disease, a complete overhaul of your diet will need to take place, which will include eliminating the junk foods and replacing them with healthy foods like fish,” she said in an interview with The Feast.
Sorry, guys, sounds like it's too early to celebrate. Guess you should cut back on the lobster bisque fries after all.
