Ice cream flavors keep getting more and more out-there (um, how about a scoop of fish and chips?). But we're not always craving totally over-the-top novelty in our ice cream. We'd rather go for full-on indulgence, mixed in with just the right amount of unexpectedness. Here, seven summer flavors we can't get out of our heads right now:
Raspberry Pink Peppercorn at OddFellows Ice Cream Co., New York City
You never know who you might run into at Oddfellows in New York, run by James Beard-nominated chef Sam Mason and partner Mohan Kumar. Celeb guests have included Top Chef’s Padma Lakshmi, and actresses Cristina Ricci and Susan Sarandon. The shop's small-batch ice creams are made with local ingredients and come in flavors like chorizo caramel swirl and miso cherry. But it’s the sweet-and-spicy, icy raspberry pink peppercorn sorbet that has us running back for more.
Sourdough with Chocolate and Strawberries at Salt & Straw, Portland, Oregon
Salt & Straw’s Portland scoop shops sling mind-blowing seasonal creations that will make you wish it was summer all year long. Among them is the genius sourdough mixed with chocolate and strawberries, for a triple threat worth every molecule of sugar and carbs.
Peach and Mustard Seed at Cloud 10 Creamery, Houston
Cloud 10's cravable housemade flavors include the year-round Nutella-marshmallow and the seasonal mangoes and toasted meringue (pictured), but chef Chris Leung's new varieties, especially the fruity-and-tart peach and mustard seed, are what have us waiting in line. And we'll be back to try the matcha with lychee gummies to the, and the Greek yogurt mixed with cucumber-mint jam (hmm, ice cream for breakfast, perhaps?).
Savannah Buttermint at Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, Columbus, Ohio
Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams deserves the fame its won over the past decade or so, and its roster of must-try flavors is long and deep (whiskey and pecans...cherries jubilee... don't get us started). But whatever you do, don’t skip the Savannah Buttermint, inspired by old-school buttermint candies. The creamy-cool combo of peppermint and white chocolate merges with butter and the perfect amount of sea salt, and you'll want to top it all off with extra-bitter hot fudge sauce for a sensory experience like no other.
Salted Caramel at Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream, Seattle
Salted caramel ice cream is ubiquitious lately, but the brilliantly balanced version at Molly Moon is one of our favorites. The shop attracts a steady stream of celebs in town, from Tyra Banks (who doubled up with two scoops of vanilla and maple walnut ice cream) to singer Ciara and her fiance, NFL star Russell Wilson, who favor a double scoop of vanilla in a waffle cone.
Brotherly Love Pink Lemonade at Little Baby's Ice Cream, Philadelphia
Little Baby's in Philadelphia is making us renew our childhood love affair with pink lemonade; their ice cream based on that retro flavor is made with real lemon juice, dried lemon zest and beet powder. And since 100 percent of the sales of the flavor go to local charity Broad Street Ministry, it’s (almost) guilt free.
Blackberry, Lime and Basil at Lick Honest Ice Creams, San Antonio
Matthew McConaughey, Elijah Wood, Forest Whitaker and Zoey Deschanel are all fans of Austin’s Lick Honest Ice Creams, a classic ice cream parlor that sources all of its milk and cream from one small herd of grass-fed cows living just 70 miles away. The flavors, inspired by Texan ingredients and flavors, range from cilantro-lime to classic milk chocolate, to a gorgeous blackberry with basil and lime that tastes exactly like summer.
