Social media can be terrifying territory for moms. Jam-packed with perfect, precious parenting moments, Instagram has become a display case for those rare instances when both your kids and your house are somehow miraculously clean. (In real life that only lasts for, like, three minutes, but in Instagram life that’s the image that lives forever.)
Adding to the picture-perfect pressure? Those flawless celebrities. They make everything look so easy! News flash: Everything is so easy when you have an entire team to help you with literally everything.
When Hollywood moms get super honest on Instagram, it’s a huge relief. If the rich and famous don’t have to pretend this is easy, why should the rest of us?
So this Mother's Day, instead of a gallery of bathed and combed children lined up in a row, we’re celebrating the badass mamas that remind us #MomLife isn’t perfect. It’s filled with messy, chaotic, and hilarious moments. And wine. Lots of wine.
Mom to Silas, 2, Jessica posts plenty of photos of her dog baby but not many of her human one. In one of her few references to mom life, the actress and spouse of Justin Timberlake captioned this seemingly serene shot, “Chilling on a peaceful Sunday… Yeah right! I’m sleeping with my eyes open while my kiddo wanders around nearby. #momlife.”
By now Chrissy is one of the queens of keeping it real on Insta. But with one photo and two words, the mom to baby Luna, 1, almost broke the Internet. “MY MILK” wrote the supermodel mom of this shot, which showed her screaming on a rollercoaster while grabbing her chest.
When you think of women trying to be super perfect moms, Reese Witherspoon’s Big, Little Lies character Madeline Martha Mackenzie comes to mind. In real life (or at least in Instagram life) the mom of three keeps things a bit more down to earth with posts like this. #MomLife
There’s working mom Gisele Bundchen who posted a photo of her breastfeeding in a robe surrounded by a glam team working on her hair and makeup in advance of a fashion shoot. Then there’s Kristin Cavallari. The mom of three boys took to Instagram last January to show the other, less glamorous, side of working and breastfeeding: pumping.
There are some things only beer can help with. A house full of cake and three year olds is one of them. After her son Otis’ third birthday, actress Olivia Wilde posted a shot of her boozy “decompression session” adding #somanyminimaniacs #hairbyOtis. That’s true love.
Any new mom that’s nursing can relate to one of the most common casualties of breastfeeding: leaks. Amber Tamblin, who had baby Marlow in February, isn’t sugarcoating her experience. Spoofing celebrity weeklies she quipped: “Who Wore It Better? Left tit or right tit? #MilkLife #StarsTheyreJustLikeUs!”
