This Chicken Diet Almost Killed Matt Damon

And it wasn't even chicken from outer space.

Matt Damon frequently needs to be saved. Whether it’s advancing troops in World War II, the inhospitable ecosystem of Mars, or the inhospitable ecosystem of that planet from Interstellar (avoid space travel, Matt), it’s safe to say he doesn’t always know what’s best for himself. In fact by some estimates, he’s the first person/actor to have nearly $1 trillion spent on his rescue efforts.

With all this in mind, it should come as no surprise that in his younger days he also needed to be saved from himself.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Matt answered questions on everything ranging from the smell of Julia Stiles (“Happiness”) to his most challenging role. In responding to the latter, he revealed that while prepping for a role in the film "Courage Under Fire," he underwent a dramatic weight loss that took him all the way down to 139 pounds (compared to his current weight of roughly 190 pounds). His secret? Eating nothing but chicken breast and running 13 miles a day. Woof. 

Still, Damon claims, the daily half marathon wasn’t even the worst part. Says Matt, “The hard part was the diet; all I ate was chicken breast. It's not like I had a chef or anything, I just made it up and did what I thought I had to do.”

A diet of grilled, skinless chicken breast may not sound that horrible. After all, chicken breast is high in protein and low in calories, which means it can be a great staple not only to help shed body fat, but also to improve your body composition. However there are, obviously, a lot of key nutrients and vitamins a skinless chicken breast can’t provide. (Cue the old "all things in moderation.")

After his terrible, poorly balanced chicken diet, Damon had to spend time taking medication and consulting with a doctor to repair a damaged adrenal gland. His doctors also reportedly told him the stress could have done permanent damage to his heart or even killed him.

All this is to say, we’re glad Matt Damon got to a point where he could afford his own nutritionist. We prefer our Damons with a little more meat on their bones.
