Travelers from all over America headed for Washington, D.C. ahead of the presidential inauguration — both for the official ceremony as well as for a much-publicized protest known as the Women's March, slated for Saturday. Media estimates expect a draw of about 200,000, with local law enforcement preparing for a deluge up to 400,000 — with huge names in feminism and activism, such as Gloria Steinem and Angela Davis, as honorary co-chairs.
One Southwest Airlines flight destined for Washington and carrying passengers bound for the march turned the jaunt into a pre-party and rally in the sky, when the flight crew turned the cabin lights pink in what was apparently a show of solidarity with the marchers.
Passengers were, you might say, tickled pink — sharing the moment gleefully on social media.
"When your Southwest flight crew celebrate a plane full of kickass women and men going to the Women's March by lighting it up!! #lit," one passenger captioned her Instagram photo.
Another noted that a cheer erupted from the passengers when the cabin started to glow pink.
A spokesperson for the airline told Mashable, "While we're unaware of details surrounding a specific flight, our flight crews celebrate, commemorate, acknowledge, and share in special moments with our customers all the time. Some of our aircraft are equipped with mood lighting and while this was not a companywide initiative, at times, our flight crews will adjust the lighting for a customer or group of customers traveling on their flight. For example, in October, one of our flight crews changed the lighting to honor a breast cancer survivor onboard their flight."
Indeed, one of Southwest’s draws — and marketing messages — is its personalized and relaxed approach to customer service. It’s also got a solid record for on-time flights, as well as a decent chance of affording you an empty middle seat to spread out.
