Tom Hiddleston needs to get something off his chest--mainly that I heart T.S. tank top.
You know the one. Go ahead, Google it. Take your little fingers and start typing Hiddleston and tank top and guess what comes up? Yup. It lives forever. And ever. Forever, Tom. Longer than you and Taylor.
It was a weird day in American history. Perhaps the Brit actor didn't quite comprehend the importance of his then girlfriend Taylor Swift's annual Fourth of July costume party/photo op/one-night annual use of that $17 million oceanside mansion that the singer/doula added to her real estate portfolio after she was briefly obsessed with becoming a Kennedy.
So, along with the models, (Ryan Reynolds?!) and the professional photographer who receive the golden ticket invite, in 2016, The Night Manager star was also included in the festivities. Now, listen, who wouldn't date Taylor Swift? She's gorgeous, talented, and insanely rich.
But TOM HIDDLESTON when she instructs you to wear a wife beater proclaiming your love for her after just a few months or 52 years of dating, you just don't do it. You politely refuse and you run ashore and ask Ryan Reynolds if he has an extra T-shirt you can please borrow because you're getting a sunburn.
But it's too late for that, isn't it Tom? Good lookin' out Ryan.
So while you were hoping to play James Bond, instead you got played by Taylor the way she plays all her pretty little instruments. You became a laughing stock. And never quite recovered. All because of a shirt. So now he's stuck doing press for nothing really (just his career in general) and he's trying to shake Hiddleswift so he can once again be seen as a man who is living up to his full potential.
So Tom goes and gives an interview to GQ, where he can hardly eat and refuses steak while looking downcast and...discusses the tank top.
While eating witht he reporter at The Bull & Last in London, "his voice has gone low" when the issue of Taylor - and the "shirt" - is raised.
“She’s generous and kind and lovely, and we had the best time...Of course it was real.”
Then the reporter asks if Tom wants to say anything about "the Fourth of July party at which he donned that fateful tank top."
And here we go:
"He looks off into the middle distance, and here is what he says:
'The truth is, it was the Fourth of July and a public holiday and we were playing a game and I slipped and hurt my back. And I wanted to protect the graze from the sun and said, 'Does anyone have a T-shirt?’ And one of her friends said, ’I’ve got this.’”
One guess what it was. It was the stuff of nightmares - the "I ♥ T.S." tank top.
“And we all laughed about it. It was a joke. Among friends."
No Tom. It was a joke around the world unfortunately. And here is where he reveals that he's losing sleep over the tank top and has most likely started intense therapy to try to decipher what horrible decisions led to that wardrobe choice.
“I have to be so psychologically strong about not letting other people’s interpretations about my life affect my life. A relationship exists between two people. We will always know what it was. The narratives that are out there altogether have been extrapolated from pictures that were taken without consent or permission, with no context. Nobody had the context for that story. And I’m still trying to work out a way of having a personal life and protecting it, but also without hiding. So the hardest thing is that that was a joke among friends on the Fourth of July.”
At this point the reporter describes the scene:
"He still isn’t looking at me. The last piece of my steak is now poised on his fork in mid-air. He is so sad, and I can’t take it anymore, so I put my hand on his and I say, 'Tom, Tom, it’s okay. You don’t have to talk about the tank top anymore. I got it. I understand. I’ll tell the world.' But he can’t stop talking about it. He literally cannot stop talking about it."
As for Taylor, Tom was kind.
“I only know the woman I met. She’s incredible...A relationship in the limelight takes work. And it’s not just the limelight. It’s everything else.”
Everything else=tank top.
