Tyler Perry has been open about his rags to riches life—and now he’s revealing he still has a tie to his abusive past.
Years ago, the director had revealed that his father had been abusive to him growing up, and he tells Oprah that he is still in contact with him, providing him shelter and feeding him for the rest of his life.
In an interview for Oprah’s Master Class on OWN, Tyler explained:
“Number one, my mother asked me to because she loved him. And secondly, as terrible as he was, and as horrible as he was, he never once left us. We were never hungry. And every time he’d go to work all week, he’d bring the money home. In return, I’m giving him what he gave to me. I had shelter. I had food. He has shelter — pretty nice shelter — and any food that he wants to eat.”
Emmitt Perry Sr., the man Tyler believed was his biological father, was in fact not his actual father. His mother had lied about that fact and died before ever telling her son the truth. But later, Tyler says, it kind of made more sense why the man had shown such anger and hatred towards him,
“From a child, I’d always known that this man despised me, and I could not figure it out for the longest,” he said. “I could not figure out why he hated me so. And every action was about his hatred or his disdain for me.”
