Widow Asks to Meet the Most Passed-Over Dog at Her Local Shelter—Then Adopts Him

Proof that there is still good in this world!

Melani Andrews has been through a lot of heartbreak in the past couple years. Last January, she lost her husband. This past February, she lost her beloved dog Lola. At the encouragement of her granddaughters, Andrew decided to adopt another dog to keep her company—but the dog she chose surprised everyone.

Andrews went to her local shelter, the Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento (which you may recall from that time a shelter dog tried a Unicorn Puppuccino). Then, according to the shelter’s Facebook page, “[She asked] who the oldest, hardest to adopt dog was. So we introduced her to Jake. Jake has been with us for a long time, is a senior and has cancer in addition to skin problems. He was getting passed up time and time again. But Melani came to the shelter not just to find a great dog, but to save a life and give unconditional love to a dog in need. As you can see, it's a match made in heaven.”

"On his kennel was a sign saying, 'Hi, I am Jake and I have been around here for awhile now!'" Andrews told Buzzfeed. "'I am 12 years old. I am small and I hope someone will adopt me into their lovely family soon. I am a mellow guy and I would love your company.' You could see he was a fighter and wanted to go to a home, something he missed.”

Andrews quickly adopted the senior pup and the two have been inseparable ever since. She is hoping that her and Jake’s story will inspire more people to consider the dogs who are often overlooked.
