It was just a couple of weeks ago that Kim Zolciak-Biermann and Brielle Biermann encountered some serious drama while traveling through the airport in Frankfurt, Germany — which touched off an intense Twitter war of words.
The mother-daughter pair was on their way home to Atlanta from their trip to Venice, Italy when they faced what they characterized as an abusive search, and even theft, at the hands of airport officials.
Now, Kim is telling Jet Set what really happened that crazy day.
"It was more or less, when I went through security, she was squeezing my bag with all my Nutri-Grain bars, throwing my wigs around," Kim explains. "She was acting crazy, which is fine. She’s searching my bags — that’s her job."
But it wasn't just a run-of-the-mill security search. "Then she’s like, 'You need to go through additional security,' in a condescending tone," Kim explains. "Like fine, send me through additional security."
But from there, things took a much more troubling turn. "She was like, 'I swiped your bags and your wrists and you tested positive for explosives,'" Kim says. "I was like, Is this a joke? Lady, really? I barely have time, I have to get on my flight!"
Kim claims that although the security officer was being unreasonably thorough with her belongings, the approach was inconsistent: "They were going through my stuff again and throwing [it] all around, yet they missed Ariana’s bag, and she had a one-liter bottle of water that they never found. I look over, and they’re throwing up Brielle’s Kashmere bottle of toning oil. It was 118 milliliters, and they only accept 100 milliliters I guess. They were throwing out her food, all sorts of stuff of hers. It was bizarre."
And there was nothing Kim could do to help when Brielle called out for her: "She was like, 'Mom, mom!' And I’m like, 'I can’t do anything. I’m over here testing positive for explosives!'"
Matters got more complex when it appeared to security that luggage had changed hands among the traveling squad: "My producer who was with me, they sent her back to be searched, and I was like, 'Well give me my suitcase.' And they were like, 'You need to hold on. That’s not your suitcase.' My husband grabs the suitcase, and they wind up sending my husband and her through further security. I was like, 'This is ridiculous!'"
As Kim tells it, that's when matters got not just personal, but political too. "They guy yelled, 'It's because of your government!'" she says. "It was a fiasco. I was like, you need to relax, bro. Relax. We barely made our flight. It was pretty nuts. Atlanta was happy to see me."
Since the drama went down, Kim hasn't followed up to file an official complaint. "I didn’t even contact them, other than when Brielle was tweeting because she was so upset," she says. But she's not ruling it out, saying, "I should probably complain because it was really gross. I think it’s nothing but discrimination. I was searched multiple times!"
And it turns out that the whole messy exchange cast a cloud over what could have been a special first for Kim — her first trip to Europe. "I’m not trying to travel anytime soon — I definitely am not trying to go back to Europe anytime soon," she says. "I’ve never been to Europe. I’ve been to Turks and Caicos, and the Bahamas, and Mexico, but never to Europe. That was quite the experience for sure!"
